if some one who has sufficient means and leisure, would collate the copies of this work, and print a correct edition of it, with such additions and improvements in notes, as his own experience might enable him to give. This would be an excellent supplement to the Kamoos, in which we find scarcely any of the terms used in the different sciences. Having stated every thing that occurs to me as necessary, with reference to the manuscripts, &c. to which recourse has been had in compiling the following work, I now take the opportunity of presenting my sincere thanks to the Right Honourable Lord Teignmouth for the trouble he was so good as to take in making enquiry after the MSS. relating to Mr. Martyn's controversy, and to Sir Gore Ouseley for his kindness in lending them for the purpose of being translated and published. I have also to thank the Rev. Mr. Simeon for the miniature from which the portrait of Mr. Martyn has been engraved for the present work. There is indeed another portrait published, taken from a painting made in India, and which is now to be had at the booksellers; but, as the present one was taken before Mr. Martyn left the University, I thought I should be justified in endeavouring to perpetuate the likeness at that period. I have now to apologize for the length of time which has elapsed during the progress of this work through the press. Much ill-health, official duties, and some previous engagements, have been the cause. In future, perhaps, I may be able to contribute something more on this subject: and, if I can do so, in a way likely to advance the glory of God, and the good of man, I shall not shrink from the task.
