78.

ASCENSION DAY.

Hail the day that sees him rise,
Glorious, to his native skies!
Christ, awhile to mortals given,
Re-ascends his native heaven.

Him though highest heaven receives,
Still he loves the earth he leaves;
Though returning to his throne,

Still he calls mankind his own.

TUNE 11.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors;

And the King of glory shall come in.

Who is this King of glory?

The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up ye ever

lasting doors;

And the King of glory shall come in.

Who is this King of glory?

The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.

The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens;

And his kingdom ruleth over all.

Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. the Lord, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

his

Bless

ye

Bless the Lord, all his works, in all places of his dominion: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in

own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father;

To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever: Amen.

86, 78 & 48.

Crown the Saviour, angels, crown him!
Rich the trophies Jesus brings;

In the seat of power enthrone him,
While the heavenly concave rings:
Crown him! crown him!

Crown the Saviour, "King of kings!"

TUNE 585.

S. M.

CHOIR-Sing of his dying love,

Sing of his rising power;
Sing how he intercedes above
For us whose sins he bore.

ALL-To our Redeemer-God,

Wisdom and power belong;
Immortal crowns of majesty,
And heaven's eternal song.

TUNE 595.

Thus saith the Lord: The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.

He maketh the clouds his chariots, and walketh upon the wings of the wind.

O Lord, our Redeemer! Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive; thou hast received gifts for men ; Yea, for the rebellious also, that the Lord God might dwell among them.

88 & 78.

Jesus, hail! enthroned in glory,
There for ever to abide !

All the heavenly hosts adore thee,
Seated at thy Father's side:
There for sinners thou art pleading,
There thou dost our place prepare,
Ever for us interceding,

Till in glory we appear.

¶ Congregation seated.

TUNE 167.

The Father of glory hath raised Christ from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: and hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth

all in all.

We see Jesus who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor.

By his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us, now to appear in the presence of God for us.

After he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, he sat down on the right hand of God; from thenceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

L. M. 61.

Before the Father's awful throne,

Our high-priest lifts his piercéd hands,
And, interceding for his own,

His purchased property demands;
His people's everlasting friend,

Who, loving, loves them to the end.

TUNE 96.

In my Father's house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. I ascend to my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God.

If we be risen with Christ, let us seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall we also appear with him in glory.

C. M.

Lift up our thoughts, lift up our songs,
And let thy grace be given,

That while we linger yet below,

Our hearts may be in heaven.

¶ Congregation rises.

TUNE 14.

O Lord, Jesus Christ, our merciful Saviour! May thy glorious resurrection and ascension,

Render us more spiritually and heavenly-minded.

May thy sitting at the right hand of God,

Inspire us with the confident assurance of final triumph.

May thy sending the Holy Ghost,

Bring us a fuller revelation of thy truth and grace.

May thy prevailing intercession,

Secure our peace and safety.

May thy return in glory, or our being called home to thee, Introduce us to the joy of our Lord.

58, 88 & 58.

When I hence depart,

Strengthen thou my heart;

Where thou art, O Lord, convey me;
In thy righteousness array me,
That at thy right hand
Joyful I may stand.

TUNE 68.

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be;

But we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect?
It is God that justifieth.

Who is he that condemneth?

It is Christ that died, yea rather that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.

Blessing and honor and glory and power be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

L. M.

Long as we live, and when we die,

And while in heaven with him we reign;
This song our song of songs shall be;
"Worthy the Lamb, for he was slain!"

TUNE 22.

The Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

78.

Amen.

Praise our glorious King and Lord,

Angels waiting on his word,

TUNE 205.

Saints that walk with him in white,
Pilgrims walking in his light;

Glory to the eternal One,

Glory to his only Son,

Glory to the Spirit be,

Now, and through eternity.

OFFICES OF WORSHIP

FOR

SUNDAY EVENING.

[NOTE.-These offices of worship are intended for use at the opening of the evening service on those Sundays for which there is no special liturgy. The first may be used particularly on the Sundays between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday, and the second on the Sundays after Trinity.

Either may, however, be used at the option of the Minister, at any season of the year.]

I.

The Minister shall begin the service by reading the following sentences of Scripture:

The Lord is in his holy temple, let all the earth keep silence before him.

The mighty God, even the Lord, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, hath God shined.

Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and bless the Lord.
Stand up and bless the Lord your God forever and ever.

Here shall the congregation rise and sing:

TUNE, OLD HUNDREDTH.
From all that dwell below the skies
Let the Creator's praise arise;
Let the Redeemer's name be sung
Through every land by every tongue.

Then, all standing, the Minister shall say and the congregation respond: O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come. Blessed is the man whom thou choosest and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts.

We shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house even of thy holy temple.

But who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord?

Or who shall stand in his holy place?

He that hath clean hands and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
