per,and a fardine ftone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in fight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty feats, and upon the feats I faw four and twenty elders fitting, clothed in white raiment, and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings, and thunderings, and. voices. And there were feven lamps of fire burning before the throne which are the feven fpirits of God. And before the throne there was a fea of glafs like unto cryftal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne were four beafts full of eyes before and behind. And the firft beaft was like a lion, and the fecond beaft like al calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beaft was like a flying eagle. And the four beafts had each of them fix wings about him, and they were full of eyes within, and they reft not day and night, faying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come. And when thofe bealts give glory, and honour, and thanks to him that fat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders fall down before him that fat on the throne, and worfhip him that liveth for ever and ever, and caft their crowns before the throne, faying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory, and honour, and power, for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

The Gospel. S. John 3. 1.

There was a man of the Pharifces, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. The fame came to Jeius by night,, and faid unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do thefe miracles that thou doeft, except God be with him. Jefus anfwered and faid unto him, Verily, verily I fay unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot fee the kingdom of God. Nicodemus faith unto him, How cana man be born when he is old? can he enter the fe

cond time into his mothers womb, and be born? Jefus answered, Verily, verily, I fay unto thee, Except a man be born of water, and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou heareft the found thereof; but canft not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth; fo is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus anfwered ; and said unto him,How can these things be? Jefus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Ifrael, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I fay unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testifie that we have seen, and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not; how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things? and no man hath afcended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man, who is in heaven. And as Mofes lifted up the ferpent in the wilderness: even fo muft the Son of man be lifted up; that whofoever believeth in him; fhould not perish, but have eternal life.

Amen.

The Epible. 1 S. John 4. 7.

Eloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and every one that loveth is born of God,and knowFur God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for

God

God is love. In this was manifefted the love of God towards us,because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and fent his Son to be the propitiation for our fins. Beloved, if God fo loved us,we ought alfo to love one another. No man hath feen God at any time.If we love one another, God dwelleth in us,and his love is perfected in us.Hereby know we that we dwell in him,and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. And we have feen, and do teftifie that the Father fent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.Whofoever shall confess that Jefus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us.God is love; and he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God,and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldnefs in the day of judgment, becaufe as he is,fo are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love cafteth out fear; becaufe fear hath torment: He that feareth; is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us. If a man fay, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath feen, how can he love God, whom he hath not feen And this commandment have we from him, that he who loveth God, love his brother also.

The Gospel. S. Luke 16. 19.

"Here was a certain rich man, who was clothed in

Tpurple, and fine linen, and fared fumptuoufly every day. And there was a certain begger named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate full of fores, and defiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich mans table: moreover the dogs came and licked his fores. And it came to pass that the begger died, and was carried by the angels into Abrahams bofom:the rich man alfo died and was buried. And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and feeth Abraham afar off, and Lazare

in his bofom. And he cried, and faid, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and fend Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame. But Abrahám faid. Son, remember, that thou in thy life-time receivedft thy good things, and likewife Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And befides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: fo that they who would pass from hence to you, cannot; neither can they pafs to us,that would come from thence, Then he faid, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldeft fend him to my fathers houfe: for I have five brethren; that he may teftifie unto them, left they alfo come into this place of torment. Abraham faith unto him, They have Mofes and the prophets; let them hear them. And he faid, Nay, father Abraham, but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he faid unto him, if they hear not Mofes and the prophets, neither will they be perfwaded, though one rofe from the dead.

The Collect.

Lord, who never faileft to help and govern them whom thou dost bring up in thy stedfaft fear and love, keep us, we beseech thee, under the protection of thy good providence, and make us to have a perpetual fear and love of thy holy Name, through Jefus Chrift our Lord. Amen.

The Epiftle S. John 3.13.

Arvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. Weknow thatwe have palled from death unto life, because we love the, brethren: he that loveth not his brother, abidethin death. Whofoever hateth his brother,is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer hath ternal life abiding in him. Hereby preceive we the

Cod, because he laid down his life for us: and

We

we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whofo hath this worlds good, and feeth his brother have need, and fhutteth up his bowels of compaffion from him; how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed, and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and fhall affure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater then our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence towards God. And whatfoever we ask, we receive of him, becaufe we keep his commandments, and do thofe things that are pleafing in his fight. And this is his commandment, that we fhould believe on the name of his Son Jefus Chrift, and love one another,as he gave us commandment And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

And another faid, I have bought five yoak of oxen, and I go to prove them; I pray thee have me excafed. And another faid, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. So that fervant, came, and fhewed his Lord thefe things. Then the mafter of the houfe being angry, faid to his fervant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hi ther the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the fervant faid, Lord, it is done as thou haft commanded, and yet there is room. And the Lord faid unto the fervant, Go out into the high-ways, and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my hom
