this delightful subject; and to-morrow we shall read of how Jesus appeared to his disciples. But now, my dear children, tell me how we should feel when we read or think of our Lord's resurrection."

Harry said, "We should be very happy, mamma."

"Very happy, and very, very thankful. For this shows us that the work of Christ for our salvation was indeed finished; he had taken away the power of death and the grave,—all who believe in him are now safe; and though we must all die, and lie down in the tomb as he did, it is but for a little time, we shall rise again, glorious and blessed. On Easter Sunday, which is the day that many Christians keep as a particular day in remembrance of this, I have read that in some countries the people all go about rejoicing, and when they meet one another, though they have never met before, one says joyfully, 'The Lord is risen!' and the other replies, Yes, he is risen!' as if it were good news they were telling; and the

poorest person may salute the richest and greatest that morning."

"That is very pretty, mamma."

"I think it is, though we have not the custom, and the people who observe it are generally Roman Catholics, and very ignorant. But we should try to think of this every Sabbath morning. And oh we need to think of it when our dear friends die, and we must lay them in the grave. That is a sad dark place indeed for those who do not believe in Jesus. But we may hear the angel say, 'Come, see the place where the Lord lay;' and we need not be afraid to think of going there ourselves for a little, or of laying there those whom we love."

"Mamma, will you take us some day to little Eliza's grave?"

"She is not buried here, my love; we did not live here when she died. Her grave is in a very lovely spot, with fine old trees all round the churchyard, and the beautiful sea and rocks seen through the openings. Some day I do

hope to take you and Harry there. Now we must finish our lesson. What verse will you write to-day?"

"Oh, mamma, what the angel says to the women,' Fear not ye,' these two

"They are very beautiful verses, and ought to make us very thankful and happy. Now, I think you have a hymn about the Sabbath, and Jesus rising that day."

HYMN.

THIS is the day when Christ arose
Triumphant from the dead;
Why should I keep my eyelids closed
And waste my hours in bed?

This is the day when Jesus broke
The powers of death and hell;
And shall I still wear Satan's yoke,
And love my sins so well?

To-day with pleasure Christians meet,
To pray and hear thy word;
And I would go with cheerful feet,

To learn thy will, O Lord.

I'll leave my sport to read and pray,
And so prepare for heaven;

O may I love this blessed day,

The best of all the seven!

PRAYER.

O heavenly Father, we thank thee that Jesus died, and rose again, and that therefore those who believe in him need not fear to die. Give us true faith, and make us often think of this with joy and thankful hearts. We thank thee for the holy Sabbath, which is to keep us always in remembrance of the resurrection of the Lord. O forgive our sinful thoughts and words this day, and make us love the Sabbath more and more, and think it the best and happiest day of all the week. And so prepare us for the rest and joy of heaven, where we shall always serve thee, and praise thee, and love thee, and never sin or sorrow any more. Hear us and bless us, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

THE WALK TO EMMAUS.

"MAMMA," said Ellen next morning,

you promised to tell us more about how Jesus appeared to his disciples after he rose from the dead."

"Yes, my love, we have much that is interesting about that, written in the Bible. He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, when she was alone at the sepulchre, full of sorrow; then to the holy women together, as we read of yesterday, and then to Peter. Do you remember what Peter had done?"

"He had denied that he knew Jesus at all. O, mamma, did he appear to him ?"

"He did, for the heart of our dear Lord was as full of love and compassion, after he rose from the grave, as it had been before. He knew how bitterly Peter was weeping, how truly he had
