cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he

come.

These words contain not only the whole of the institution, but likewise the reason why it was first instituted. And it has been observed by all good Christians ever since that time, to keep up more impressively the memory of our Lord's crucifixion.-And he must be unworthy of the name of Christian, who refuses this mark of his obedience and regard to the commands of his dying Redeemer. He shews, by his neglect, that he has no love for the great Benefactor who so loved him, that he laid down his life for his sake, nor thankful for the blessings conferred by the death of Christ.

In remembering the death of Christ in this holy rite, you should bring to your memory all the things that relate to it.

1st. That you are a sad unworthy sinner, unworthy of the mercies bestowed upon you. That you were a child of wrath, but through this precious blood-shedding, your Redeemer hath conferred upon you the privilege to be called a child of God, and joint heir with Christ.

2dly. Of your Saviour remember, that he left the glory which he had in heaven with the Father, before the world was, that he / condescended to take upon him the form of a servant, and was made man. Remember what a pattern of beautiful excellence and lovely goodness he displayed, in his whole life, and that you are called upon to learn of him and follow his steps. Remember what great things he hath done for you, how much he suffered for your sake: that he had not even where to lay his head; that for you he was buffeted, scourged, spit upon, and crowned with thorns; that his body was broken and blood shed for you in the dreadful punishment of the cross; and that by his sacrifice alone you can be healed. Remember greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend. These things, therefore, must be uppermost in your mind, they must, they will promote in your heart a thankful remembrance of his death, and love for your Redeemer, thus dying for you. The love of Jesus Christ must excite a love of every thing that is good and virtu

ous; and the love of what is good and virtuous, will, through Christ, make you acceptable with God.

3dly. Remember that Christ died for all mankind, as well as for you, to give them peace, and put them into a condition to work out their salvation. That in every sense they are your brethren, all alike, without respect of persons, members of Christ's body, all born in sin, all children of wrath, all unworthy of such great blessing, yet now all joint heirs of the kingdom of heaven. When all these things are remembered, they afford the most strong reason why you should love one another as Christ hath loved you, and be in charity with all men.

But as sinners who remain in their sins, and do not repent of what they have done, can have no benefit from the death of Christ, nor expect to be admitted to heaven, they are not worthy to partake of the Lord's Supper. Therefore,

That you may be worthy of all these blessings, examine yourself, whether in deed and in truth you are sorry for all you have

done amiss, in thought, word, and deed. If you are, cease to do evil; learn to do well; resolve to forsake your sins, and live better for the time to come, have a firm and faithful trust in the mercies of God, through Jesus Christ; be thankful for His death, through whose precious blood-shedding, peace was made upon the cross; and be in charity with all men.

To these things add earnest prayer to God, for pardon and assistance, and may He have mercy upon your soul.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

1

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

1

Blessed are they that do hunger and thirst' after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.

Blessed are ye when men shall revile you,

and

all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake, "Rejoice and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven."-Matthew v.

persecute you, and shall say

"To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin."-James iv. 17.

THE END.
