is promised again, and confirmed by a Sign, 12 and a Vifion. Ver. 1 A FTER these Things the Word of the LORD came unto Abram in a VISION, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy SHIELD, and thy exceeding great RE WARD. 2 And Abram faid, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, feeing I go CHILDLESS, and the Steward of my House is this Eliezer of Damafcus ? 3 And Abram faid, Behold, to me thou hast given No SEED: and lo, one born in my House is mine Heir. 4 And behold, the Word of the Lord came unto him, faying, This shall not be thine Heir, but he that shall come forth out of thine own Bowels fhall be thine Heir. 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and faid, Look now toward Heaven, and tell the STARS, if thou be able to NUMBER them: and he faid unto him, So shall thy SEED be. 6 And he BELIEVED in the LORD; and he counted it to him for RIGHTEOUSNESS. 7 And he faid unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of the Land of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this Land to inherit it. 8 And he said, LORD God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it? 9 And he faid unto him, Take me an Heifer of three Years old, and a She-goat of three Years old, and a Ram of three Years old, and a Turtle-dove, and a young Pigeon. To And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the Midst, and laid each Piece one against another: but the Birds divided he pot. 14 For if they which are of the Law be HEIRS, FAITH is made void, and the PROMISE made of none Effect. 15 Because the Law worketh Wrath: for where no Law is, there is no Tranfgreffion. 16 Therefore it is of FAITH, that it might be by GRACE; to the END the PROMISE might be fure to all the Seed, not to that only which is of the Law, but to that also which is of the FAITH of ABRAHAM, who is the FATHER of us all, 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a FATHER of many Nations) before him whom he BELIEVED, even GOD who QUICKNETH the DEAD, and calleth those Things which BE NOT, II And when the Fowls came down upon the Carcases, Abram drove them away. as though THEY WERE. 18 Who against HOPE, BELIEVED in Hope, that he might become the FATHER of many Nations; according 12 And when the Sun was going down, a deep Sleep fell upon Abram; and lo, an Horror of great Darkness fell upon him. to that which was spoken, So shall thy Seed be. 19 And being not weak in FAITH, he confidered not his own Body now DEAD, when he was about an hundred Years old, neither yet the DEADNESS of Sarah's Womb. 20 He STAGGERED not at the PROMISE OF GOD through UNBELIEF; but was strong in FAITH, giving GLORY to GOD. 21 And being fully Perswaded, that what he had PROMISED, he was ABLE also to perform. 22 And therefore it was IMPUTED to him for RIGHTEOUSNESS. 23 Now it was not written for his SAKE ALONE, that it was imputed to him; 24 But for US ALSO, to whom it shall be IMPUTED, if we BELIEVE on him that RAISED UP Jesus our LORD from the Dead, 25 Who was DELIVERED for our OFFENCES, and was RAISED again for Our JUSTIFICATION. Gal. iii. 6 Even as Abraham BELIEVED God, and it was accounted to him for RIGHTEOUSNESS. 7 Know ye therefore, that they which are of FAITH, the fame are the CHILDREN of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture foreseeing that God would justify the HEATHEN through FAITH, preached before the GOSPEL unto Abraham, saying, in thee fhall all NATIONS be BLESSED. 9 So then they which be of FAITH, are BLESSED with faithful Araham. 13 CHRIST hath redeemed us from the Curse of the Law, being made a Curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a Tree: 14 That the BLESSING of Abraham might come on the GENTILES through JESUS CHRIST; that we might receive the PROMISE of the SPIRIT through FAITH. John viii. 56 Abraham REJOYCED to see my Day, and he saw it, and was glad. 57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty Years old, and haft thou seen Abraham? 58 And Jesus faith unto them, Before Abraham was, I am. 13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a Surety that thy Seed shall be a Stranger in a Land that is not theirs, and shall serve them, and they shall afflict them FOUR HUNDRED Years. * Ads vii. 6 And God spake on this wife, That his SEED should fojourn in a strange Land, and that they should bring them into Bondage, and intreat them EVIL FOUR HUNDRED Years. 7 And the Nation to whom they shall be in Bondage, will I JUDGE, Said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this Place. 14 And also that Nation whom they shall serve, will I JUDGE: and afterward shall they come out with great Substance. 15 And thou shalt go to thy Fathers in Peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old Age. 16 But in the fourth Generation they shall come hither again: for the Iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. 17 And it came to pass, that when the Sun went down, and it was dark, behold, a smoaking Furnace, and a burning Lamp that passed between those Pieces. 18 In that same Day the Lord made a Covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy Seed have I given this Land, from the River of Egypt, unto the great River, the River Euphrates: 19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebufites. CHAP. XVI. I Sarai, being barren, giveth Hagar to Abram. 6 Hagar, being afflicted for despising her Mistress, runneth away : 9 An Angel fendeth her back to submit herself, 11 and telleth her of her Child. 15 Ishmael is born. Ver. 1 NOW Gal. iv. 22. It is written, That Abraham had two Sons, the one by a Bond-maid, the other by a Free woman. 1 Sarai Abram's Wife bare him no Children: and she had an Handmaid an Egyptian, whose Name was Ha- but he of the Free-woman was by 23 But he who was of the Bondwoman was born after the FLESH: PROMISE. 24 Which Things are an ALLEGORY; for these are the two COVENANTS; the one from the MOUNT SINAI, which gendereth to BONDAGE, which is Agar. 25 For this Agar is MOUNT SINAL in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in BONDAGE with her Children. 26 But Jerufalem which is above, IS FREE, which is the Mother of us all. 3 And Sarai Abram's Wife took Hagar her Maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten Years in the Land of Canaan, and gave her to her Hufband Abram to be his Wife. 4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: And when she saw that the had conceived, her Mistress was despised in her Eyes. 5 And 5 And Sarai faid unto Abram, My Wrong be upon thee: I have given my Maid into thy Bofom; and when the faw that the had conceived, I was despised in her Eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee. 6 But Abram faid unto Sarai, Behold, thy Maid is in thy Hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her Face. 7 And the Angel of the LORD found her by a Fountain of Water in the Wilderness, by the Fountain in the Way to Shur. 8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai's Maid, whence camest thou ? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the Face of my Mistress Sarai. 9 And the Angel of the LORD faid unto her, Return to thy Mistress, and submit thy felf under her Hands. 10 And the Angel of the LORD faid unto her, I will multiply thy Seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbred for multitude. 11 And the Angel of the LORD faid unto her, Behold, thou art with Child, and shalt bear a Son, and shalt call his Name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy Affliction. 12 m Gen. xxv. 18 And Ishmael died in the Prefence of all his Brethren. mAnd he will be a wild Man; his Hand will be against every Man, and every Man's Hand against him; and he shall dwell in the Prefence of all his Brethren. 13 And she called the Name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I alfo here looked after him that feeth me? 14 Wherefore the Well was called Beer-lahairoi. 15 And Hagar bare Abram a Son : and Abram called his Son's Name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. 16 And Abram was fourscore and fix Years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram. CHAP. XVII. I God reneweth the Covenant. 5 Abram's Name is changed, in Token of a greater Bleffing. 10 Circumcifion is instituted. 15 Sarai's Name is changed, and she blessed. 16 Ifaac is promised. 23 Abraham and Ishmael are circumcised. Ver. 1 the Lord appeared to Abram, and faid unto him, I am the ALMIGHTY GOD; walk before me, and be thou perfect. AND when Abram was ninety Years old and nine, 2 And I will make my COVENANT between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. 3 And Abram fell on his Face: and God talked with him, saying, 4 As for me, behold, my Covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a Father of many Nations. 5 Neither shall thy Name any more be called Abram ; but thy Name shall be ABRAHAM, for a Father of many Nations have I made thee. 6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make Nations of thee; and Kings shall come out of thee. 7 And I will establish my COVENANT between me and thee, and thy Seed after thee, in their Generations for an everlasting Covenant; to be a God unto thee, and to thy Seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy Seed after thee, the Land wherein thou art a Stranger, all the Land of Canaan, for an everlasting Possession; and I will be their GOB. 9 And God said unto ABRAHAM, Thou shalt keep my COVENANT therefore, thou, and thy Seed after thee, in their Generations. 10 n This is my COVENANT which ye shall keep, between me and you, and thy Seed after thee; Every Man-child among you shall be circumcifed. 11 And ye shall circumcife the Flesh of your Fore-skin, and it shall be a Token of the Covenant betwixt me and you. 12 And he that is eight Days old shall be circumcifed among you, every Man-child in your Generations, he that is born in the House, or "Als vii. 8 And he gave him the COVENANT of CIRCUMCISION: and fo ABRAHAM begat ISAAC, and circumcised him the eighth Day: and ISAAC begat JACOB, and Jacob begat the twelve PATRIARCHS. Rom. ii. 25 For CIRCUMCISION verily profiteth, if thou keep the Law: but if thou be a Breaker of the LAW, thy CIRCUMCISION is made Uncircumcifion. 26 Therefore if the Uncircumcifion keep the RIGHTEOUSNESS of the Law, shall not his Uncircumcifion be counted for CIRCUMCISION! 27 And shall not Uncircumcifion which is by Nature, if it fulfil the Law, judge thee, who by the Letter and CIRCUMCISION, doit tranfgrefs the Law? 28 For he is not a Jew, which is F bought |
