November 22. George Nutcombe Oxnam, Esq. M.A. and Fellow of Exeter College, was called to the degree of Barrister-at-Law, by the Hon. Society of Lincoln's Inn. November 25. George Binstead Farrant, Esq. M.A. of St. John's College, the eldest son of Thomas Farrant, Esq. of Bath, was called to the bar by the Hon. Society of the Inner Temple. December 1. Charles Bellamy, Esq. B.C.L. Fellow of St. John's College, and Barrister-at-Law, was unanimously elected Vinerian Fellow of Common Law. Mr. Rice Rees, and Mr. Henry Reynolds, Commoners of Jesus College, were elected Scholars of that Society. December 2. James Frederick Crouch, of the county of Bedford, and John William Richards, of the diocese of Bath and Wells, were admitted Scholars of Corpus Christi College. John Dayman, B.A. and Scholar of Corpus Christi College, was elected Felłow of that Society. December 8. Mr. William Cripps, of Trinity College, was elected to the Vinerian Scholarship, vacant by the admission of Mr. Bellamy, of St. John's College, to a Fellowship on that foundation. The other candidates were Mr. Mylne, of Balliol College, and Mr. Evans, of Jesus College. PRIZES. Theological Prize. [Instituted June 2, 1825.] Subject" The operation of human causes only will not sufficiently account for the propagation of Christianity." The above subject, for an English Essay, appointed by the Judges, is proposed to Members of the University on the following conditions: 1. The candidate must have passed his examination for the degree of B.A. or B.C.L. 2. He must not on this day (Dec. 1) have exceeded his twenty-eighth term. 3. He must have commenced his sixteenth term on or before the 1st of February next. In every case the terms are to be computed from the matriculation inclusively. The Essays are to be sent under a sealed cover to the Registrar of the University on or before the Wednesday in Easter week next ensuing (March 29.) None will be received after that day. Chancellor's Prizes. Subjects for the ensuing year. For Latin Verses-" Montes Pyrenæi." For an English Essay Is a rude or a refined age more favourable to the production of works of fiction?" For a Latin Essay" Quibus præcipue de causis in artium liberalium studiis Romani Græcis vix pares, nedum superiores evaserint." The first of the above subjects is intended for those Gentlemen of the University who have not exceeded four years from the time of their matriculation; and the other two for such as have exceeded four, but not completed seven years. Sir Roger Dewdigate's Prize-For the best composition in English Verse, not containing either more or fewer than fifty lines, by any Undergraduate who has not exceeded four years from the time of his matriculation-" Trajan's Pillar." The Exercises are all to be sent under a sealed cover to the Registrar of the University on or before the first day of May next. None will be received after that day. The author is required to conceal his name, and to distinguish his composition by what motto he pleases; sending at the same time his name sealed up under another cover, with the motto inscribed upon it. No person who has already obtained a prize will be deemed entitled to a second prize of the same description. The Exercises to which the prizes shall have been adjudged, will be repeated (after a previous rehearsal) in the theatre, upon the Commemoration Day, immediately after the Public Orator's Creweian Oration.
