578. Is unrighteousness inexpedient ?
Dt. 4. 25. When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have reinained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the Lord thy God, to provoke him to anger, I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the Unrighteousness inexpedient. land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it:
ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed. And the Lord sha! scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the Lord shall lead you.
Job 21. 17. How oft is the candle of the wicked put out: and how oft cometh their destruction upon them? God distributeth sorrows in his anger. They are as stubble bofore the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away. God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it. His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
Job 27. 13. This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty. If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep. Though he heap us silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay ;- -The just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.
Pr. 3. 33. The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
Pr. 12. 13. The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.
Pr. 13. 5. A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame. 15. Good understanding giveth favor: but the way of transgressors is hard.
Pr. 28. 8. He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor.
Jer. 17. 11. As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.
Ezk. 39. 23. And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity:
Its origin and design-Authorised in the decalogue and gospel. because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
579. Was the weekly sabbath a primitive, patriarchal institution ?
Gen. 2. 1. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.
580. What reasons are assigned for the appointment of the sabbath ?
Gen. 2. 3. Because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
Ex. 20. 11. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath-day, and hallowed it.
Dt. 5. 14. That thy man-servant and thy maid-servant may rest as well as thou.
581. Is the primitive seventh-day sabbath recognized in the Decalogue ?
Ex. 20. 8. Remember the sabbath-day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God.
582. Is the sabbath a christian institution?
Mat. 24. 20. But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath-day.
Mk. 2. 27. And he said unto them, the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. Lk. 23. 55. And the women also, which came with Its appropropriate duties. him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the
sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath-day, according to the commandment.
583. What have been and what are some of the appro. priate duties of the sabbath ?
Lev. 19. 30. Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord.
Ezk. 46. 3. Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before the Lord in the sabbaths and in the new-moons. And the burnt-offering that the prince shall offer unto the Lord in the sabbath-day shall be six lambs without blemish, and a ram without blemish.
Mk. 6. 2. And when the sabbath-day was come, he (Christ) began to teach in the synagogues.
Lk. 4. 16. And as his custom was, he (Jesus) went into the synagogue on the sabbath-day, and stood up for to read. 31. And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath-days.
Lk. 13. 10. And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
Ac. 13. 14. And went into the synagogue on the sabbath-day, and sat down. And after the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. Then Paul stood up.
42. And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. 44. And the next sabbath-day came almost the whole city together, to hear the word of God.
Ac. 17. 2. And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath-days reasoned with them out of the scriptures.
Ac. 18. 4. And he (Paul) reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
How to be kept.
Heb. 10. 25. Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another. Is. 66. 23. Ps. 84. 1.–10. and 132.7.
584. Ought the sabbath to be kept holy ?
Ex. 16. 23. And he said unto them, This is that which the Lord hath said, To-morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which ye will bake to-day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over, lay up for you to be kept until the morning. And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein. And Moses said, Eat that to-day; for to-day is a sabbath unto the Lord; to-day ye shall not find it in the field. Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none. And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. And the Lord said unto Moses, How long resuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws? See, for that the Lord hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days: abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. So the people rested on the seventh day.
Ex. 20. 8. Remember the sabbath-day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath-day, and hallowed it.
Ex. 23. 12. Six days shalt thou do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy hand-maid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.
