A condition of salvation-Not maintained by some.

Perseverance.

495. Is perseverance in holiness a condition of salva

tion?

Ezk. 18. 24. But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

Ezk. 33. 13. When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live: if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.

Mat. 10. 22. He that endureth unto the end shall be saved. Mat. 24. 13.

1 Cor. 9. 27. I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means when I have preached to others, I myself should be a cast away.

Heb. 3. 12. Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To-day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end.

Heb. 10. 33. If any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Rev. 2. 10. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

Rev. 21. 7. He that overcometh, shall inherit all things. (Rev. 3. 5, 12, 21, and 2. 7, 11, 17, 26.)

496. Have any, who made a fair profession of godliness, apostatized?

upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man. And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion shall serve thee; for God is with thee. 9. And God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day. 11. Then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

1 Sam. 15. 11. It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me. 2 S. 7. 15.

Jn. 6. 66. From that time many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him.

Gal. 5. 4. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

1. Tim. 1. 19. Holding faith and a good conscience; which some having put away, concerning faith have made shipwreck.

2 Tim. 1. 15. All they which are in Asia be turned away from me: of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

497. What will be the end of apostates?

1 Ch. 28. 9. If thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for

ever.

Ezk. 3. 20. When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered.

Ezk. 33. 18. When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby.

Lk. 9. 62. No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. Rom. 14. 15.

Apostates never truly regenerated.

Heb. 6. 4. It is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to open shame. 9. But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

Heb. 10. 26. If we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 20. For if after the yhave escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog has turned to his own vomit again; and, the sow that was washed, to her wallowing in the mire.

498. Were apostates ever truly regenerated?

Mat. 7. 22. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Mk. 4. 16. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time.

Jn. 6. 70. Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

Danger of apostacy.

Jn. 17. 12. Those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of Perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

1 Jn. 2. 19. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

499. Are real saints, in any sense, in danger of apostacy and perdition?

Jn. 15. 6. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

1 Cor. 9. 27. But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means when I have preached to others, I myself should be a cast-away.

1 Cor. 10. 12. Let him that thinketh he standeth, take heed lest he fall.

2 Cor. 6. 1. We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.

Col. 1. 23. If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel.

Heb. 3. 12. Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To-day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end.

Heb. 4. 1. Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem

to come short of it. 11. Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

i Pet. 4. 18. And if the righteous scarcely be

saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

500. Are saints prone to backslide ?

Ex. 32. 1. And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden ear-rings which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. And all the people brake off the golden ear-rings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation, and said, To-morrow is a feast to the Lord, And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burntofferings, and brought peace-offerings: and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

2 S. 12. 7. And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things. Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

1 K. 11. 1. But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women
