to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly

kindness, charity.

476. Is governing the passions a duty?

Pr. 16. 32.

He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit, than he that taketh a city.

Pr. 25. 28. He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

477. Does the practice of peace accord with the genius and spirit of the gospel?

Jn. 18. 36, Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews.

hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Secured by forgiveness.

Jam. 5. 6. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.

478. In order to maintain peace on earth, are we required to forgive as we hope to be forgiven?

Pr. 19. 11. The discretion of a man deferreth his anger, and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

Mat. 6. 12. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 14. For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Mat. 18. 21. Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times; but, Until seventy times seven. 27. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him all the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, which owed him an hundred pence; and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellow servant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. 32. Then his lord after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow servant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormenters, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Mk. 11. 25. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any; that your Father also which

is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But, if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Lk. 6. 37. Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven.

Lk. 17. 3. If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

Col. 3. 12. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long suffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Ep. 4. 32. Be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

479. Has God required us to bear injuries, and to return good for evil, and love for hatred?

Pr. 25. 21. If thine enemy be hungry, give him. bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: for thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.

Mat. 5. 38. Ye have heard- -An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. 43. Ye have heard,Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just, and

on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye?

Lk. 6. 30. Of him that taketh away thy goods, ask them not again. 35. Love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven.

Rom. 12. 14. Bless them which persecute you, bless and curse not. 20. If thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink:-Be not overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.

1 Pet. 2. 18. Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. For this is thank-worthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffetted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? But if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps. 23. Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously.

1 Pet. 3. 8. Love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise, blessing: knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

480. Are revenge, retaliation and war forbidden? Ex. 20. 13. Thou shalt not kill. Lk. 18. 20.
