339. Are modesty, lowliness, and condescension required?

Pr. 25. 6. Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men: For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower.

341. Has the use of intoxicating drinks been common?

Gen. 9. 20. And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.

1 S. 25. 36. And Abigail came to Nabal; and behold he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken.

Is. 28. 7. They also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judg ment. For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.

Is. 56. 12. Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink.

Jer. 51. 7. Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord's hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.

Dan. 5. 1. Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand. 4. They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and of silver.

Joel 1. 5. Awake, ye drunkards, and weep, and howl all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

342. Is intoxicating drink adapted to deceive and injure?

Pr. 20. 1. Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Pr. 23. 21. The drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty. 29. Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. 34. Thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me; shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

Jer. 25. 27. Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more.

Hos. 4. 11. Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.

343. Is intemperance forbidden and discouraged?

Dt. 21. 20. He is a glutton and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die.

Lev. 10. 9. Do not drink wine nor strong drinkwhen ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations.

Num. 6. 2. When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the Lord; He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink.

Pr. 23. 20. Be not among wine-bibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh. 31. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his color in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: 22. Wo unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink.

Is. 28. 1. Wo to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine.

Rom. 13. 13. Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

1 Cor. 6. 10. Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Gal. 5. 19. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: Of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

344. Is it wise and expedient to avoid intoxicating drink, and the tempters and temptations to it?

Pr. 6. 27. Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

Dan. 1. 8. And Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank. 12. Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. 15. And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.
