Is. 41. 16. Thou shalt rejoice in the Lord, and shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel.

Ph. 3. 1. Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord.

Ph. 4. 4. Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.

268. Will true joy in God sustain the heart?

1 Sam. 2. 1. My heart rejoiceth in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord; my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.

Neh. 8. 10. Neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

Hab. 3. 19. The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hind's feet.

1 Pet. 1. 8. Though now ye see him not, yet believing ye rejoice with joy unspeakable, and full of glory.

269. Is it wise to exhibit the perfections, purposes and government of God, in preaching the gospel?

Dt. 29, 29. The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us, and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Dt. 32. 2. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: Because I will publish the name of the Lord.

Ps. 36. 9. In thy light shall we see light.

Jer. 23. 28. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?

Jn. 17. 26. I have declared unto them thy name and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me, may be in them, and I in them.

God only to be worshipped. 2 Cor. 3. 18. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the d.

2 Tim. 3. 16. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

1 Pet. 4. 11. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God.

Government Moral.

270. Is God the only proper object of religious worship?

Ex. 20. 2. I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Ps. 96. 4. The Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens. 8. Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name.

Mat. 4. 10. Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

272. Are we required to obey, serve and worship God with supreme affection ?

Dt. 6. 13. Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him. Dt. 13. 4. Ye shall walk after the Lord


God, and fear him, and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.

Ps. 95. 6. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To-day, if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your heart.

Public worship required. Ps. 96. 9. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth. Ps

. 99.5. Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.

Mat. 6. 33. Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.

Mat. 25. 26. Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strewed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.

Col. 3. 23. And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.

273. Is the public worship of God required and eremplified ?

Neh. 8. 1. And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water-gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel. And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. And he read therein before the street that was before the water-gate from the morning until mid-day, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law, And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose

-And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up: And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground. Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the

people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.

Ps. 40. 7. Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me. I delight to do thy will,

my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest. I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy loving-kindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

Ac. 11. 25. Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: 26. And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people.

Ac. 13. 14. But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath-day, and sat down. And after the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand, said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience. 42. And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. Now, when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas; who speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. And the next sabbath-day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

Ac. 20. 20. And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house. Testify

Heb. 10. 24. And let us consider one another, to provoke unto love, and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

274. Ought religious instruction to be given at public worship?

Neh. 8.8. So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God; mourn not nor weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law

Mk. 2. 1. And again he entered into Capernaum, after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.

Lk. 4. 43. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also, for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogue of Galilee.

Lk. 19. 47. And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests, and the scribes, and the chief of the people sought to destroy him.

Jn. 6. 59. These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

Jn. 8. 1. Jesus went unto the mount of Olives: And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down and taught them.
