162. Are depraved creatures deceitful?

2 Cor. 11. 13. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness.

Ep. 4. 14. Be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.

2 Tim. 3. 13. Evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

163. What are some of the scriptural marks of deceit and hypocriys?

2 S. 15. 5. And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him, to do him [Absalom] obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.

2 K. 10. 16. Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord.

Job 9. 20. If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: If I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove

me perverse.

Pr. 20. 6. Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find ? Pr. 30. 12.

164. What is said of hypocrites and hypocrisy?

Mat. 6. 2. When thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do, in the synagogues, and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. 5. And when thou prayest thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily, I say unto you, They have their reward. 16. Moreover, when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily, I say unto you, They have their reward.

165. Are sinners charged with stupidity?

Ps. 94. 5. They break in pieces thy people, O Lord, and afflict thine heritage. They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless. Yet they say, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it. Understand, ye brutish among the people; and ye fools, when will ye be wise?

Pr. 6. 9. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep.

Is. 1. 3. The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.

Is. 5. 12. And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine are in their feasts; but they regard not the work of the Lord, neither consider the operation of his hands. Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge.

Jer. 4. 22. My people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

Jer. 8. 7. The stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle, and the crane, and the swallow, observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the Lord.

166. Do sinners forget God?

Dt. 32. 18. Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee. And when the Lord saw it he abhorred them.

Jud. 3. 7. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgat the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves; Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel. 1 S. 12. 9.

Ps. 106. 21. They forgat God their Saviour, which had done great things in Egypt; Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea. Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach to turn away his wrath.

Jer. 2. 32. Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

Jer. 3. 21. They have forgotten the Lord their God -Return ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings.

Ezk. 22. 12. Thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbors by extortion, and hast forgotten me saith the Lord God.

167. Does human depravity appear in acts of ingratitude?

Gen. 40. 23.

Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.
