ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, and judge of all men; we acknowledge and lament before thee the manifold errors and follies of our lives. Our only hope is in thy mercy, which endureth for ever. We bow ourselves before the throne of thy grace, imploring thy pardon. O God, have mercy upon the works of thy hands; forgive and accept thy people, according to thy promises in Jesus Christ our Lord. En

able us, O God, by the assistance of thy holy Spirit, to forsake every evil way, to correct whatever is wrong in our tempers and conduct, and to delight in the practice of every thing good and virtuous; that we may obtain from thee, the God of all mercy, the forgiveness of our sins, and an inheritance among those who are sanctified, through the redemption which is in Jesus Christ.

People.

Create in us, O God, a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within us.

Then shall be read the COLLECT FOR the Day, and one or more of the following Prayers.

FOR RESIGNATION.

O LORD God, whose never failing providence ordereth all things both in heaven and in earth, we submit ourselves to the disposal of that wisdom which cannot err, and to

the care of that goodness which is unchangeable and everlasting. Lead us whither thou pleasest; place us in what circumstances thou shalt judge proper; we would do thy whole will with fidelity and pleasure; we would bear thy whole will with submission and patience. Defend us, O gracious Father, from every real evil; confer upon us every needful good; may all events conspire to the improvement and establishment of our virtue; and may we be conducted by thine unerring hand, through all the changes of this mortal life, and finally be admitted to the everlasting habitations of the just, which thou hast promised to thy faithful servants by Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR ALL MANKIND.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hast taught us to offer prayers, supplications, and intercessions for all men, we beseech thee to extend thy mercy to all mankind;

may all the families and kingdoms of the earth, be brought to the knowledge and pure worship of thee, the only true God; enlarge the kingdom of thy Son, that kingdom of truth and righteousness, which shall never be destroyed; may the spirit of persecution for ever cease; and may truth and righteousness, peace and charity every where abound, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR OUR COUNTRY.

O LORD God, high and mighty, who dost from thy throne behold all the dwellers upon the earth; look down with favor and mercy upon these United States. May public virtue prevail, and on that lasting foundation may the public happiness be established; may our liberties be preserved inviolate, and handed down to the latest posterity. Bless us with health and fruitful seasons; crown the year with thy goodness; dispose us all to a grateful and tem

perate enjoyment of the bounties of thy providence, and a faithful obedience of thy laws, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR RULERS.

ALMIGHTY God, the King of kings, and fountain of all power, we humbly beseech thee to behold with thy favor the President of the United States, and all others in authority. May they discharge the duties of their stations with understanding and wisdom, with integrity and honor; and under their government, may we and all thy people lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty; keeping the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Amen.

FOR THE MINISTERS OF

RELIGION.

O GOD, the Father of lights, and fountain of all good, endue the ministers

of thy true religion, of every denomination, and in every part of the christian world, with the spirit and temper of Jesus Christ; and in all the duties of their office, may they conduct themselves as examples to their flocks; and by the excellence of their doctrines, and the holiness of their lives, may they save themselves and those who hear them, through the only Mediator, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR THOSE IN AFFLICTION.

MOST merciful and gracious God, the God of all consolation and hope; we humbly recommend to thy fatherly goodness, all those who are any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; be thou, in thy great mercy, a father to the fatherless, and the defender of the widow; provide for the poor, give health to the sick, and ease to those who are in oppression; give to all fortitude in the day of trial, and in due time, a happy deliverance

out of their afflictions. And from the various calamities we meet with in life, may we learn to pity the distressed, to sympathize with the afflicted, to be patient under all the appointments of thy providence, and be excited to the pursuit of that happiness, which ariseth from the practice of virtue and piety, and from the glorious hope of immortality, which thou hast promised to the faithful followers of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

CONCLUDING PRAYER.

O LORD, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who hast permitted us to make our united supplications unto thee; accept the praises and hear the prayers which we have offered to thy divine Majesty; and fulfil, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world

knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting, through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, in whose words we conclude our prayers;

OUR Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

NOW unto him who is able to keep us from falling, and to present us faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, through Jesus Christ, for ever and ever. Amen.

END OF FIRST SERVICE.

SECOND SERVICE.

The Service is to be introduced by the following Address from the Minister to the People.

HEAR, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world; for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

Let the heaven and the earth praise him; the sea, and every thing that moveth therein.

Trust in him at all times, ye people; pour out your hearts before him; for God is our refuge.

People.

ilies of the earth continually depend; we would present ourselves before thee with reverence and humility; we would offer unto thee our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, with joy and gratitude. By celebrating thy perfections, may we be excited to an ardent love and imitation of thee, our Father in heaven. May we confess our sins with unfeigned sorrow, and steady pur
