maintain; while, at the same time, each division thus made presents a separate subject of itself for serious consideration.

May the Lord be graciously pleased to smile upon the work, and crown it with his blessing! For all that may be amiss, the Author earnestly craves forgiveness. Wherein he may fail in exhibiting the powerful claims of the doctrines he is anxious to enforce, (and well might it be asked "who is sufficient for these things?") he requests it may be charitably imputed to his own weakness and infirmities rather than attributed to any defect in the subject itself, which no mortal being, even though aided by a divine power, is able either fully to grasp, be his mind ever so capacious, or utterly exhaust, be his abilities ever so devoted. And for whatever measure of good may be accomplished, in every instance in which it may please the Author and Giver of all mercy to seal it with his divine benediction, he desires that the whole praise and glory may be rendered to him to whom alone it is due-Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

SERMON I.

GOD'S SUPREME DOMINION & UNIVERSAL AUTHORITY.

1 CHRONICLES, XXIX. 11, 12.

"Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all: Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all: and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.”

THE true knowledge of God must always be considered as the foundation of all acceptable religion; and this equally concerns communities and nations, as well as individuals. Error or mistake on this point cannot but be attended with the most fatal consequences. To affirm that there is "no" such Being, or to inscribe an altar to an "unknown God," proclaims at once the desperate sin of the human heart, and the fearful condition into which ignorance and su
