2 How can ye believe which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? ver. 44. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil, iii. 19. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? viii. 45, 46. But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him, xii. 37-11. And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding and they would not come, Matt. xxii. S. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! xxiii. 37. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth, say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely, Rev. xxii. 17.

bLabour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed, John vi. 27. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out, 37. And this is the will of him

that sent me, That every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life and I will raise him up at the last day, 40. Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord,

to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life, 68. In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water, vii. 37, 38. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly, x. 10. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? xi. 26. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light, Eph. v. 14. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God, 1 John v. 11–13.

VER. 41.

I receive not honour from men.
VER. 42.

Αλλ ̓ ἔγνωκα ὑμᾶς, ὅτι τὴν ἀγάπην τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἔχετε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς.

bJesus said unto them, if God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me, John viii. 42. He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God, 47. Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying, 55. He that hateth me hateth my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. But this cometh to pass, that the word might

not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me, John vi. 38. Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him, viii. 28, 29. Jesus answered them, I told you, and beye lieved not the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me, x. 25. Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again, xii. 28. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me, xvii. 8. Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him, Exod. xxiii. 21. And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to-day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec,

For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought. After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed, Acts v. 36, 37.

We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is, ix. 28, 29. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away, Matt. xix.
