Καὶ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡμέρα, συνήχθη τὸ Πρεσ. βυτέριον τοῦ λαοῦ, ̓Αρχιερεῖς τε καὶ Γραμματεῖς, καὶ ἀνήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ συνέ δριον ἑαυτῶν, λέγοντες·

And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the Chief Priests and the Scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,

[Now the Chief Priests and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death: But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came; yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. And the High Priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace, Matt. xxvi. 59-63. And the Chief Priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus, to put him to death: and found none. For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together. And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying, We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands. neither so did their witness agree together, Mark xiv. 55-59.]

And the whole multitude of them arose, a and led him unto Pilate.

VER. 2.

Ἤρξαντο δὲ κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ, λέγοντες· Τοῦτον εὕρομεν διαστρέφοντα τὸ ἔθνος, καὶ κωλύοντα Καίσαρι φόρους διδόναι, λέγοντα ἑαυτὸν Χριστὸν βασιλέα εἶναι.

And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, a and forbidding to give tribute to Casar, saying that he himself is Christ ba King.

[And the Chief Priests accused him of many things, Mark xv. 3. They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee, John xviii. 30.]

VER. 3.

"O de Miλáros tangárnσev avròv, λéγων. Σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων; Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ ἔφη· Σὺ λέγεις.

And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.

him, Thou sayest it, Mark xv. 2. Then Pilate entered into the judgment-hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the Chief Priests have delivered thee unto me: What hast thou done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: If my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. Pilate

therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was 1 born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth?

VER. 4.

Ὁ δὲ Πιλάτος εἶπε πρὸς τοὺς ̓Αρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ὄχλους· Οὐδὲν εὑρίσκω αἴτιον ἐν To ȧveрάπ TOUTO.

Then said Pilate to the Chief Priests and to the people, I find no fault in this

man.

[Pilate when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all, John xviii. 38.]

VER. 5.

Οἱ δὲ ἐπίσχυον, λέγοντες· Οτι ἀνασείει τὸν λαὸν, διδάσκων, καθ ̓ ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας, ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἕως ὧδε.

And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

VER. 6.

Πιλάτος δὲ ἀκούσας Γαλιλαίαν, ἐπηρώτησεν εἰ ὁ ἄνθρωπος Γαλιλαῖός ἐστι.

When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilean.

VER. 7.

Καὶ ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας Ηρώδου ἐστὶν, ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς Ηρώδην, ὄντα καὶ αὐτὸν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν ταύταις rais huépais.

VER. 8.

Ὁ δὲ Ἡρώδης, ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν, ἐχάρη λίαν· ἦν γὰρ θέλων ἐξ ἱκανοῦ ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν, διὰ τὸ ἀκούειν πολλὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἤλπιζέ τι σημεῖον ἰδεῖν ὑπ ̓ αὐτοῦ γίνου μενον.

And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him ; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.

a Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some that John was risen from the dead; And of some, That Elias had appeared ; and of others, That one of the old prophets was risen again. And Herod said, John have l° beheaded ; but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him, Luke ix. 7-9.

And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.

Πιλάτος δὲ, συγκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ̓Αρ χιερεῖς, καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας, καὶ τὸν λαὸν,

And Pilate, when he had called together the Chief Priests and the rulers and the people,

VER. 14.

Εἶπε πρὸς αὐτοὺς• Προσηνέγκατέ μοι τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον, ὡς ἀποστρέφοντα τὸν λαόν· καὶ ἰδοὺ, ἐγὼ ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ἀνακρίνας, οὐδὲν εὗρον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ αἴτιον, ὧν κατηγορεῖτε κατ ̓ αὐτοῦ.

Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth mined him before you, have found no the people: and, behold, I, having exafault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him :

a And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Cæsar, saying that he himself is Christ a King, ver. 2.

And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:

[Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber, John xviii. 40.]

Ὅστις ἦν διὰ στάσιν τινὰ γενομένην ἐν | ing, Let him be crucified, Matt. xxvii.

τῇ πόλει, καὶ φόνον, βεβλημένος εἰς φυ- | λακήν.

(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.) VER. 20.

Πάλιν οὖν ὁ Πιλάτος προσεφώνησε, θέλων ἀπολῦσαι τὸν Ἰησοῦν.

Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.

[The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? Matt. xxvii. 21.]

VER. 21.

22. And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him, Mark xv. 14. But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him, John xix. 15.]

VER. 24.

Ὁ δὲ Πιλάτος ἐπέκεινε γενέσθαι τὸ αἴτη μα αὐτῶν·

And Pilate * gave sentence that it should be as they required.

Απέλυσε δὲ αὐτοῖς τὸν διὰ στάσιν καὶ φόνον βεβλημένον εἰς τὴν φυλακὴν, ὃν ᾐτοῦνΟἱ δὲ ἐπεφώνουν, λέγοντες· Σταύρωσον, τοῦ τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν παρέδωκε τῷ θελήματι σταύρωσον αὐτόν.

And he said unto them the third time, Why? what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.

[And the governor said, Why? what evil hath he done? Matt. xxvii, 23. Then Pilate said unto them, Why? what evil hath he done? Mark xv. 14.]

But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, 1 Pet. i. 19. Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously, ii. 22, 23.

Ἠκολουθει δὲ αὐτῶ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ γυναικῶν· αἳ καὶ ἐκόπτοντο, καὶ ἐθρήνουν αὐτόν.

Ηγοντο δὲ καὶ ἕτεροι δύο, κακοῦργοι, σὺν αὐτῷ ἀναιρεθῆναι.

And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.

VER. 33.

Καὶ ὅτε ἀπῆλθον ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν και

λούμενον Κρανίον, ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν, Tρv. καὶ τοὺς κακούργους· ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν, ὃν δὲ

And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they a crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

[And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, A place of a skull, And they crucified him, Matt. xxvii. 33. 35. And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. And with him they crucify two thieves ; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left, Mark xv. 22. 27.

And he, bearing his cross, went forth into a place, called in the Hebrew, Golgotha ; called The place of a skull, which is Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst, John xix. 17, 18.]

VER. 34.

Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔλεγε· Πάτερ, ἄφες αὐτοῖς· οὐ γὰρ οἴδασι τί ποιοῦσι. Διαμεριζόμενοι δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ, ἔβαλον κλῆρον.

Then said Jesus, a Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

a But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
