A. D. 33. Priests, and the Scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace, of the High Priest, who was called Caiaphas. And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. But they said, Not on the feastday, lest there be an uproar among the people, Matt. xxvi. 3-5. And the Chief Priests and the Scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death. But they said, Not on the feast-day, lest there be an uproar of the people, Mark xiv. 1, 2.]

VER. 3.

Εἰσῆλθε δὲ ὁ Σατανᾶς εἰς Ἰούδαν τὸν ἐπικαλούμενον Ισκαριώτην, ὄντα ἐκ τοῦ agμoũ tãv Sádena.

VER. 38.

Καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὤρθριζε πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἀκούειν αὐτοῦ.

And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.

[And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them, John viii. 2.]

CHAP. XXII.-VER. 1. Ἦγγιζε δὲ ἡ ἑορτὴ τῶν ἀζύμων, ἡ λεγομένη Πάσχα.

Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. [Ye know that after two days is the feast of the Passover, Matt. xxvi. 2. After two days was the feast of the Passover, and of unleavened bread, Mark xiv. 1.]

VER. 2.

Καὶ ἐζήτουν οἱ ̓Αρχιερεῖς, καὶ οἱ Γραμ ματεῖς τὸ, πῶς ἀνέλωσιν αὐτον· ἐφοβοῦντο | γὰρ τὸν λαόν.

And the Chief Priests and Scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.

VER. 4.

Καὶ ἀπελθὼν συνελάλησε τοῖς ̓Αρχιε ρεῦσι καὶ τοῖς στρατηγοῖς τὸ, πῶς αὐτὸν παραδῷ αὐτοῖς.

with the Chief Priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.

And he went his way, and communed

[Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the Chief Priests, And said unto them,` What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? Matt. xxvi. 14, 15. And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the Chief Priests, to be tray him unto them, Mark xiv. 10.]

VER. 5.

Καὶ ἐχάρησαν· καὶ συνέθεντο αὐτῷ ἀξγύριον δοῦναι.

to give him money. And they were glad, and covenanted

[And saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water : follow him, Mark xiv. 13.]

VER. 11.

Καὶ ἐρεῖτε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ τῆς οἰκίας· λέγει σοι ὁ διδάσκαλος· Ποῦ ἐστι τὸ κατά λυμα, ὅπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγω ;

And ye shall say unto the good-man of the house, a The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guest-chamber, where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples?

[And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand, I will keep the Passover at thy house with my disciples, Matt. xxvi. 18. And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the good-man of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples? Mark xiv. 14.]

VER. 12. Κακεῖνος ὑμῖν δείξει ἀνώγειν μέγα ἐστρωμένον· ἐκεῖ ἑτοιμάσατε.

a And he shall shew you a large upper, room furnished: there make ready.

[And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us, Mark xiv. 15.]

VER. 13. ̓Απελθόντες δὲ εὗρον καθὼς εἴρηκεν αὐτ τοῖς· καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ πάσχα.

And they went, and found as he had said unto them and they made ready the Passover.

[And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the Passover, Matt. xxvi. 19. And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the Passover, Mark xiv. 16.]

VER. 14.

Καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο ἡ ὥρα, ἀνέπεσε, καὶ οἱ dádena ámóotodo sùv avtõ.

a And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.

And he said unto them, *With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer :

VER. 16. Λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν, ὅτι οὐκέτι οὐ μὴ φάγω ἐξ αὐτοῦ, ἕως ὅτου πληρωθῇ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ.

For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

VER. 19.

Καὶ λαβὼν ἄρτον, εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασε καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς, λέγων· Τοῦτό ἐστι τὸ σῶμά μου, τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν διδόμενον· τοῦτο ποιεῖτε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν.

a And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

VER. 21. Πλὴν ἰδοὺ, ἡ χεὶρ τοῦ παραδιδόντος με μετ ̓ ἐποῦ ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης.

VER. 22.

Καὶ ὁ μὲν υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου πορεύεται κατὰ τὸ ὡρισμένον· πλὴν οὐαὶ τῷ ἀνθρώπω ἐκείνω δι ̓ οὗ παραδίδοται.

a And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!

ζοντες αὐτῶν, εὐεργέται καλοῦνται.

a And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.

[But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them, Matt. xx. 25. And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.

[And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? Matt. Ixvi. 22. And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I? Mark xiv. 19. Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon | Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? John xiii. 22-25.]

[But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant, Matt. xx. 26, 27. VER. 27.

Τίς γὰρ μείζων, ὁ ἀνακείμενος, ἢ ὁ δια κονῶν ; οὐχὶ ὁ ἀνακείμενος ; ἐγὼ δέ εἰμι ἐν μέσῳ ὑμῶν ὡς ὁ διακονῶν.

For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? a but I am among you as he that serveth.

[Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister,

Εγένετο δὲ καὶ φιλονεικία ἐν αὐτοῖς, τὸ, Matt. xx. 28. For even the Son of

And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.

VER. 30.

ἵνα ἐσθίητε καὶ πίνητε ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης μου, ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ μου· καὶ καθίσησθε ἐπί θρόνων, κρίνοντες τὰς δώδεκα | φυλὰς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ.

a That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

a Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? 1 Cor. vi. 2, 3. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as 1 also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne, Rev. iii. 21.

VER. 31.

Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? and he said unto him, Lord thou knowest all things: thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep, John xxi. 15-17. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary. the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom he may devour : Whom resist, stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of

all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, set tle you, 1 Pet. v. 8-10. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall to make your calling and election never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth, 2 Pet. i. 10-12. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless, iii. 14. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, be. ing led away by the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory, both now and for ever. Amen, 17, 18.

VER. 33.

Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Κύριε, μετὰ σοῦ ἕτοιμός εἰμι καὶ εἰς φυλακὴν καὶ εἰς θάνατον πορεύεσθαι.

a And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
