And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

VER. 27.

Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house :

VER. 28.

And he said, Nay, father Abraham : but if one went unto them from the dead, they will a repent.

a See on Matt. iii. ver. 2. clause 1.

VER. 31.

And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Abraham saith unto him, a They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as front lets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up, Deut. xi. 18, 19. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth ; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein : for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success, Josh. i. 8. For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life, Prov. vi. 23. VER. 6.

* See on Matt. xvii. ver. 20.

VER. 7.

Τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν δοῦλον ἔχων ἀροτριῶντα, ἢ ποιμαίνοντα, ὃς εἰσελθόντι ἐκ τοῦ ἀγροῦ ἐρεῖ εὐθέως· Παρελθὼν ἀνάπεσαι;

But which of you, having a servant ploughing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?

VER. 8.

Αλλ ̓ οὐχὶ ἐρεῖ αὐτῷ· Ἑτοίμασον τί δειπνήσω, καὶ περιζωσάμενος διακόνει μοι, ἕως φάγω καὶ πίω· καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα φάγεσαι καὶ πίεσαι σύ;

And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken, and afterward thou

shalt eat and drink?

VER. 9.

Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.

VER. 10.

as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding. Ο LORD our God, all this store that we have prepared, to build thee an house for thine holy name, cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own, 1 Chron. xxix. 14-16. Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself? Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect? Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment? Job xxii. 2-4. Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou. If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him ? If thou be righreceiveth he of thine hand? xxxv. 5 teous, what givest thou him ? or what -7. Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? a For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost, Rom. xiv. 17.

And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.

VER. 23.

Likewise a also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;

a And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Then Lot chose

him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east; and they separated themselves the one from the other. Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked, and sinners before the LORD exceedingly, Gen. xiii. 10-13. And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know, xviii. and said, Wilt thou also destroy the 20, 21. And Abraham drew near, righteous with the wicked? Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? That be far from thee to do after this manner; to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes. And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD, which am but dust and ashes. Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it. And he spake unto him yet again, and

said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake. And LonD be angry, and I will speak : he said unto him, Oh let not the Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it if I find thirty there. And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake. And he said, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake. And the LORD went his

way, as soon as he had left commun-
ing with Abraham: and Abraham re-
turned unto his place, 23-33. And
there came two angels to Sodom at
even; and Lot sat in the gate of So-
dom and Lot, seeing them, rose up
to meet them; and he bowed himself
with his face toward the ground; And
he said, Behold now, my lords, turn
in, I pray you, into your servant's
house, and tarry all night, and wash
your feet, and ye shall rise up early,
and go on your ways. And they said,
Nay; but we will abide in the street
all night. And he pressed upon them
greatly; and they turned in unto him,
and entered into his house : and he
made them a feast, and did bake un-
leavened bread, and they did eat. But
before they lay down, the men of the
city, even the men of Sodom, com-
passed the house round, both old and
young, all the people from every
quarter: And they called unto Lot,
and said unto him, Where are the men
which came in to thee this night?
bring them out unto us, that we may
know them. And Lot went out at
the door unto them, and shut the
door after him, and said, I pray you,
brethren, do not so wickedly.
hold now, I have two daughters which
have not known man; let me, I pray
you, bring them out unto you, and do
ye to them as is good in your eyes :
only unto these men do nothing: for
therefore came they under the shadow
my roof. And they said, Stand
back. And they said again, This one
fellow came in to sojourn, and he will
needs be a judge: now will we deal
worse with thee than with them. And
they pressed sore upon the man,
even Lot, and came near to break the
door. But the men put forth their
hand, and pulled Lot unto the house
to them, and shut to the door.
they smote the men that were at the
door of the house with blindness, both
small and great; so that they wearied
themselves to find the door. And the
men said unto Lot, Hast thou here
any besides? son-in-law, and thy
sons, and thy daughters, and whatso-
ever thou hast in the city, bring them
out of this place : For we will destroy
this place, because the cry of them is
waren great before the face of the
LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to

destroy it. And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons-in-law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get ye out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons-inlaw. And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city, xix. 1—15.

VER. 29.

a But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

a Then the LORD rained upon Sodom, and upon Gomorrah, brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground, Gen. xix. 24, 25. And turning the cities of Sodom and GoBe-morrha into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds :) 2 Pet. ii. 6-8. Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them, in like manner giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire, Jude 7.
