go to a place for you; and if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." "Ye now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. "When the day of Pentecost was fully come," they felt that joy which must needs be perceived when the Holy Ghost is "shed abroad in the hearts" of men. When our Lord, on leaving the world, went unto his Father, he did not go merely to enjoy afresh that primeval glory which he originally possessed. God is the source of wisdom, of mercy, and of justice. Whatever is agreeable to the divine attributes, is gathered together in radiant glory around the throne of God, and issues from thence in streams of living water, making glad the city of God,—the
Church, the Saints, and God's elect. God's wisdom hath given us the sacred volume of the New Testament. God's God's mercy hath provided for us a Mediator, who, knowing the infirmity of our nature, is one day to dispense, in tenderness, the justice of God. Jesus Christ, who sent the Comforter unto his first followers, and baptized them, not many days after his ascension, with the Holy Ghost, has promised to be with his Church unto the end of the world. He enlightens our understandings, directs our wills, and purifies our hearts. He, our great High Priest, now appearing, and continually officiating, in the presence of God for us, intercedes mightily on our behalf. He presents our prayers; he offers up the incense of our praises; he procures pardon for us, when, with contrite spirits, we confess our sins. He extenuates our failings, strengthens our pious
resolutions; gives us forbearance in prosperity, and endues us with strength to support the burthen of adversity. He directs the providence of God, so that all things, if we take them as we should, endure them as we ought, or understand them rightly, work together for our good. To him, my beloved, turn your eyes in faith. Though he has left the world, he pleads with the Father;in this truth let us fix and abide, as an "anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast." The Apostles saw him in the likeness of man, and conversed with him personally on earth, and beheld him ascend bodily into heaven. The first Martyr saw him standing at the right hand of God, to succour him at the hour of death. Let us walk by faith, as they by sight; and let us remember what he said to that Apostle, who doubted the fact of his
resurrection,- -"Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed; blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.'

Whither shall I go from thy Spirit; or, whither shall I flee from thy presence?
FROM these words I propose to treat of the omnipresence of God, or that attribute of the Deity, by virtue of which he is present every where; and, in consequence of which, he is omniscient, knowing every thing. In discussing subjects of this kind, we shall do well to remember what God said to Moses when he appeared unto him at the bush ;-" Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground."
