An impression uncommonly large,for a Book of that price and mag. nitude, was rapidly exhausted, and the demand continued to increase.This induced me to think of giving a new Edition, 4 a 3 1937 tion, with the corrections and improvements which every man will find it proper to make on reviewing his own performance. It furnished me at the same time with an opportunity of presenting in an English dress several interesting - pieces of my Original, which had either not been translated at all, or only in detached morsels. In order to extend the circulation, and consequent usefulness of the Publication, it occurred to me that, by a small alteration in the form of the page, the five Volumes of the first Edition, even with the additional new matter, might be compressed into four.
