5. And, when life's toilsome day is o'er,
May its departing ray
Be calm as this impressive hour,
And lead to endless day.

[blocks in formation]

1. DEAR Father, to thy mercy-seat
My soul for shelter flies ;

'Tis here I find a safe retreat,

When storms and tempests rise.

2. My cheerful hope can never die,
If thou, my God, art near;

Mrs. Brown.

Thy grace can raise my comforts high,
And banish every fear.

3. My great Protector, and my Lord,
Thy constant aid impart ;

O, let thy kind, thy gracious word
Sustain my trembling heart.

4. O, never let my soul remove

From this divine retreat;

Still let me trust thy power and love,
And dwell beneath thy feet.

[blocks in formation]

1. O COULD I find, from day to day,
A nearness to my God;

Then should my hours glide sweet away,
While leaning on his word.

2. Lord, I desire with thee to live
Anew from day to day;

In joys the world can never give,
Nor ever take away.

3. Blest Jesus, come, and rule my heart,
And make me wholly thine;

That I may never more depart,
Nor grieve thy love divine.

4. Thus till my last, expiring breath,
Thy goodness I'll adore;

And when my frame dissolves in death,
My soul shall love thee more.

Prayer for Sincerity.

1. LORD, when we bend before thy throne,

And our confessions pour,

O, may we feel the sins we own,
And hate what we deplore.

2. Our contrite spirits pitying see;
True penitence impart;

And let a healing ray from thee
Beam hope on every heart.

3. When we disclose our wants in prayer,
O, let our wills resign;

And not a thought our bosom share,
Which is not wholly thine.

4. Let faith each meek petition fill,

And waft it to the skies;

And teach our hearts 'tis goodness still

That grants it, or denies.

Refuge in God.

1. DEAR Refuge of my weary soul,
On thee, when sorrows rise,

On thee, when waves of trouble roll,
My fainting hope relies.

2. To thee I tell each rising grief,
For thou alone canst heal;

Thy word can bring a sweet relief,
For every pain I feel.

3. Hast thou not bid me seek thy face?
And shall I seek in vain?

And can the ear of sovereign grace
Be deaf when I complain?

4. No! still the ear of sovereign grace
Attends the mourner's prayer!

O, may I ever find access,

To breathe my sorrows there.

5. Thy mercy-seat is open still;
Here let my soul retreat;

With humble hope attend thy will,
And wait beneath thy feet.

[blocks in formation]

1. PRAYER is the breath of God in man,

Returning whence it came;
Love is the sacred fire within,
And prayer the rising flame.

2. It gives the burdened spirit ease,
And soothes the troubled breast
Yields comfort to the mourners here,
And to the weary rest.

3. When God inclines the heart to pray,
He hath an ear to hear;

To him there's music in a groan,
And beauty in a tear.

4. The humble suppliant cannot fail
To have his wants supplied,

Since He for sinners intercedes
Who once for sinners died.

Praise for the Gospel.

1. TO our almighty Maker, God,
New honors be addressed;
His great salvation shines abroad,
And makes the nations blessed.

2. He spake the word to Abraham first:
His truth fulfills his grace;

The Gentiles make his name their trust,
And learn his righteousness.

3. Let the whole earth his love proclaim,
With all her different tongues;
And spread the honors of his name,
In melody and songs.

Watts.

The Messiah's Coming and Kingdom.

1. JOY to the world-the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing.

Let

2. Joy to the earth-the Saviour reigns!

Let men their songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains,
Repeat the sounding joy.

3. No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;

He comes to make his blessings flow,
Far as the curse is found.

4. He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove

The glories of his righteousness,
And wonders of his love.

Watts.
