5. Great Sun of Righteousness, arise;

Bless the dark world with heavenly light;
Thy gospel makes the simple wise,

Thy laws are pure, thy judgments right. 6. Thy noblest wonders here we view,

5.

1.

In souls renewed and sins forgiven:
Lord, cleanse my sins, my soul renew,
And make thy word my guide to heaven.
L. M.

Praise of Divine Grace.

MY soul, with humble fervor raise
To God the voice of grateful praise;
Let every mental power combine,

To bless his attributes divine.

2. Deep on my heart let memory trace
His acts of mercy and of grace;
Who, with a father's tender care,
Saved me, when sinking in despair;-

3. Gave my repentant soul to prove
The joy of his forgiving love;

6.

1.

Poured balm into my bleeding breast,
And led my weary feet to rest.

L. M.

Watts.

Pratt's Coll.

Praise for Protection, Grace, and Truth.
MY God! in whom are all the springs

Of boundless love and grace unknown,
Hide me beneath thy spreading wings,
Till the dark cloud be over-blown.

2. Up to the heavens I send my cry,

The Lord will my desires perform;
He sends his angels from the sky,

And saves me from the threatening storm.
3. High o'er the earth his mercy reigns,
And reaches to the utmost sky;
His truth to endless years remains,
When lower worlds dissolve and die.

4. Be thou exalted, O my God!

Above the heavens where angels dwell;
Thy power on earth be known abroad,
And land to land thy wonders tell.

Watts.

Retirement and Meditation.

1. MY God, permit me not to be
A stranger to myself and thee;
Amidst a thousand thoughts I rove,
Forgetful of my highest love.

2. Why should my passions mix with earth,
And thus debase my heavenly birth?
Why should I cleave to things below,
And let my God, my Saviour, go?

3. Call me away from flesh and sense;
One sovereign word can draw me thence;
I would obey the voice divine,
And all inferior joys resign.

4. Be earth with all her scenes withdrawn;
Let noise and vanity be gone;

In secret silence of the mind,

My heaven-and there my God I find.

Watts.

[blocks in formation]

1. MY God! my King! thy various praise
Shall fill the remnant of my days;
Thy grace employ my humble tongue,
Till death and glory raise the song.

2. The wings of every hour shall bear
Some thankful tribute to thine ear;
And every setting sun shall see
New works of duty, done for thee.

3. Thy works with sovereign glory shine,
And speak thy majesty divine;
Let every realm, with joy, proclaim
The sound and honor of thy name.

Watts.

Trusting God. Evening.

1. GLORY to thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light;
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath the shadow of thy wings.

2. Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
The ills which I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3. Teach me to live that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die that so I may
With joy behold the judgment day.

4. Be thou my guardian while I sleep;
Thy watchful station near me keep;
My heart with love celestial fill,
And guard me from th' approach of ill.

5. Lord, let my heart forever share

The bliss of thy paternal care :
'Tis heaven on earth, 'tis heaven above,
To see thy face, and sing thy love.

Kenn.

1. AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;

Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2. Glory to thee, who safe hast kept,

And hast refreshed me while I slept;

Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake.

3. Lord, I to thee my vows renew;
Dispel my sins as morning dew;

Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with thyself my spirit fill.

4. Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say,

That all my powers, with true delight,
In thy sole glory may unite.

11.
Renouncing the World.
1. I SEND the joys of earth away

Away, ye tempters of the mind,
False as the smooth, deceitful sea,

And empty as the whistling wind.
2. Your streams were floating me along,
Down to the gulf of black despair;
And whilst I listened to your song,
Your streams had e'en conveyed me there.
3. Lord, I adore thy matchless grace,

That warned me of that dark abyss;
That drew me from those treacherous seas,
And bade me seek superior bliss.

4. Now, to the shining realms above,

I stretch my hands, and glance my eyes:
O, for the pinions of a dove,

To bear me to the upper skies!

5. There, from the bosom of my God,
Oceans of endless pleasure roll;
There would I fix my last abode,
And drown the sorrows of

my soul.

Watts.

Prospect of the Righteous.

1. WHAT sinners value I resign;
Lord! 'tis enough that thou art mine;
I shall behold thy blissful face,
And stand complete in righteousness.
2. This life's a dream-an empty show;
But the bright world to which I go,
Hath joys substantial and sincere;
When shall I wake, and find me there?

3. O glorious hour! O! blest abode !
I shall be near, and like my God!
And flesh and sin no more control
The sacred pleasures of the soul.

4. My flesh shall slumber in the ground
Till the last trumpet's joyful sound:

Then burst the chains, with sweet surprise,
And in my Saviour's image rise.

Watts.
