I. Ventral shields in 14 or 16 longitudinal series; tympanic

FAMILY SCINCIDE.

Dentition

Tongue moderately long, with scale-like papillæ. pleurodont. Upper surface of head with large symmetrical shields. Body with imbricate scales over bony plates. No femoral pores. This family includes the Anelytropidæ.

Eight Genera in South Africa.

I. Nostril in a small or moderate-sized nasal, well separated from the rostral; præfrontals and frontoparietals present. Movable eyelids, the lower with a transparent disk; scales tri- or quinque carinate

Synopsis of the South African Species.

I. Subdigital lamellæ and scales on soles smooth or tubercularly keeled.

A. 28 to 32 scales round the body; anterior border of ear with 2 or 3 long pointed lobules.

Frontonasal in contact with frontal; a light lateral streak, passing through the ear
