When Joshua was by Jericho, &c. behold there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? and he said, Nay, but as captain (or prince) of the host of the Lord, am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face unto the earth, and did worship; and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant? -Josh. v. 13–15.

An angel of the Lord came, &c. when the angel of the Lord spake these words, &c. the people lifted up their voice and wept.-Judges ii. 1. 4. Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the Lord, &c. because they came not to the help of the Lord.-Judges v. 23.

O Lord God! for because I have seen an angel of the Lord face to face. And the Lord

said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not thou shalt not die.-Judges vi. 11, 12. 15-17.20-23.

The angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah's wife, &c. When Manoah knew that he was an angel of the Lord, he said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.-Judges xiii. 3. 6. 8. 13. 16. 18. 21, 22. My lord is wise, according to the

wisdom of an angel of God.-2 Sam. xiv. 20.

When the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord repented him of the evil.— 2 Sam. xxiv. 16; 1 Chron. xxi. 15, 16. 18. 20. 30.

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways: they shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.-Ps. xci. 11, 12; Matt. iv. 6.

Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength; that do his commandments.-Ps. ciii. 20.

The reapers are the angels, &c. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, &c. At the end of the world, the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just.-Matt. xiii. 39. 41. 49.

Despise not one of these little ones: for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.Matt. xviii. 10.

And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect, &c. but of that day and hour knoweth no man: no, not the angels of heaven.Matt. xxiv. 31. 36.

Mary saw two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet. Matt. xxviii. 2-6; Acts vi. 15; John xx. 12; Luke xxiv. 4—6. 23.

There appeared unto Zacharias an angel of the Lord, &c. who said unto him, Fear not, &c. I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God, and am sent to speak unto thee, &c. The angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin, &c.-Luke i. 11-13. 19. 26-28. 30. 35.

There were shepherds abiding in the field, &c. and lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, &c. And the angel said unto them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings, &c. and suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, &c. The angels were gone away from them into heaven, &c. Jesus, who was so named of the angels.-Luke ii. 8-10. 13— 15. 21.

He that denieth me before men, shall be denied before the angels of God.-Luke xii. 9.

There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.-Luke xv. 10.

The beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. -Luke xvi. 22.

If God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment, &c. whereas angels which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation, &c.-2 Pet. ii. 4. 11.

CHAPTER XL.

OF THE PARABLES AND SIMILITUDES

WHICH CHRIST SPAKE.

CHRIST likened those who did hear his word, and do it, to a wise man, who built his house upon a rock, &c. and those who heard, and did not do it, unto a foolish man, which built his house on the sand, &c.-Matt. vii. 24-29; Luke vi. 47, &c.

The similitude of the unclean spirit entering after a cleansing and garnishing. Matt. xii. 43-45.

The parable of the sower and the seed. Of the tares sowed among the good seed. Of the mustard-seed. Of the leaven hid in the meal. Of the

hidden treasure. Of the precious pearl. Of the net cast into the sea, and gathering all kinds.-Matt. xiii. 18. 24. 31. 33. 44, 45; Mark iv; Luke viii. 5; xiii. 18.

The kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, who sent labourers into his vineyard at several hours, and paid them all alike. -Matt. xx. 1—17.

A certain man had two sons: he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to-day in my vineyard: he, &c. said, I will not; but afterward he repented, and went: and he came to the second, and said likewise and

he, &c. said, I go, sir; and went The similitude of one asking bread not: whether of them twain did the to entertain a friend, and obtaining will of his father? &c. The parable by importunity, though not for love, of the man who planted a vineyard, &c. When the strong man armed and hedged it, expecting fruit, but the keepeth his palace, his goods are in husbandmen beat the servants, and peace: but when a stronger than he killed some and at last his son, &c. shall come upon him, &c.—Luke xi. -Matt. xxi. 28-31. 33-40; Luke 5-8. 21, 22. xx. 9.

The parable of the marriage of the king's son: those who were bidden, made light of it, and went to their farms, &c. The king sent his servants into the highways, and bid, &c. The man without a wedding garment.Matt. xxii. 1-14; Luke xiv. 16, &c. The parable of the ten virgins. Of the talents delivered unto the servants to be improved.-Matt. xxv. 1-30; Luke xix. 12.

Can the children of the bridechamber fast while the bridegroom is with them? &c. No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment, &c. No man putteth new wine into old bottles.-Mark ii. 19-22; Luke v. 34-39.

Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye? &c. A corrupt tree bringeth not forth good fruit, &c.-Luke vi. 41-44.

A certain creditor, which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, the other fifty: and when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both tell me therefore which of them will love him most? &c. He to whom he forgave most, &c. Her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, &c.-Luke vii. 41-47.

No man when he hath lighted a candle covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.-Luke viii. 16.

The similitude of the man going to Jericho, who fell among thieves, and was wounded: the priest and the Levite pass by, but helped not: the Samaritan had compassion, and took care of him this was his neighbour. -Luke x. 30-37.

The rich man said, I have no room, &c. I will pull down my barns and build greater, &c. Take thine ease, &c. but God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee, &c.-Luke xii. 16-21.
