hast promised to give the Holy Spirit to them that ask thee. We ask this of thee; and we pray thee to hear us, and to pardon all our sins, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

The Woman of Samaria at the Well.

"OUR lesson to-day," said Mrs. Ross, "shall be about what happened when Jesus had begun to preach and teach, and to work miracles, and had disciples or followers, who were always with him. Crowds of people came to hear him, wherever he went; and yet we shall see how much pains our dear Lord was ready to take, to save the soul of one poor sinful woman. Now, look at this picture!"

"Oh, how pretty!" said both Ellen and Harry. "Yes, it is very pretty; the well beside the road, and the trees above; and Jesus sitting on the side of the well, and the woman standing with her pitcher on her shoulder. We shall read about it."

"Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the

parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus, therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour."-John iv. 5, 6.

People had no pipes of water brought into their houses, in that country; they had often to go a good way to get it. Do you remember, Ellen, about Abraham sending his servant to get a wife for Isaac, and where he met with Rebekah?"

"Yes; it was at the well."

"Just such a well as this.

Jesus is

left alone. Why had he not gone to the town with the disciples? Can you tell me, Harry?"

"He was wearied, mamma."
