To-morrow it may be too late-
Then why should you delay?
3 Now is th' accepted time,
The gospel bids you come
And every promise in his word
Declares there yet is room.

HYMN 303. 8, 7, & 4. Tamworth, [bor *]

[ocr errors]

.e

Sinners invited to Christ. Mat. xi, 28-30.

COME, ye sinners, poor and wretched;

This is your accepted hour;

Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity, love, and power;"
He is able,

He is willing: doubt no more!
o 2 Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
Lost and ruined by the fall!
If you tarry till you're better,
You will never come at all:
Not the righteous-
Sinners Jesus came to call.

3 Let not conscience make you linger,
Nor of fitness fondly dream;"
All the fitness He requireth,
Is to feel the need of Him;
This he gives you;

'Tis the Spirit's rising beam. e 4 Agonizing in the garden,

Lo, your Saviour prostrate lies!
On the bloody tree behold him,
Hear him cry before he dies,
"It is finished!"

Sinners, will not this suffice?
5 Lo, th' incarnate God ascended,
Pleads the merit of his blood:
Venture on Him, venture wholly,
Let no other trust intrude:
None but Jesus

Can do helpless sinners good.

s 6 Saints and angels, joined in concert,
Sing the praises of the Lamb;
While the blissful seats of heaven
Sweetly echo with his name.
Hallelujah!

Sinners here may sing the same.

HYMN 304. 8, 7 & 4. Calvary. [*] •1HE with sweetest voice she calls; EAR, O sinner! mercy hails you,

e

Bids you haste to seek the Saviour,
Ere the hand of justice falls:
Trust in Jesus,

"Tis the voice of mercy calls.

o 2 Haste, O sinner! to the Saviour,-
Seek his mercy while you may;
Soon the day of grace is over;
Soon your life will pass away!
Haste to Jesus,

You must perish, if you stay.

HYMN 305. 12s.

New Jerusalem. [*]

Free Grace.

THE voice of free grace cries, "Escape to the mountain :"

For Adam's lost race, Christ hath opened a fountain: For sin and uncleanness, and every transgression, His blood flows so freely in streams of salvation.

CHORUS.

s Hallelujah to the Lamb, who has bought us a pardon, We'll praise him again, when we pass over Jordan." 2 Ye souls that are wounded, to the Saviour repair, Now he calls you in mercy-and can you forbear? Though your sins are increased as high as a mountain,

His blood can remove them-it flows from the foun

tain.

3 Now Jesus, our King, reigns triumphantly glorious;

O'er sin, death, and hell, he is more than victorious:
With shouting proclaim it-oh trust in his passion,—
He saves us most freely-oh precious salvation!
4 Our Jesus his name now proclaims all victorious,
He reigns over all, and his kingdom is glorious;
To Jesus we'll join with the great congregation,
And triumph, ascribing to him our salvation.

5 With joy shall we stand, when escaped to the shore;

With harps in our hands, we'll praise him the more; We'll range the sweet plains on the bank of the river,

And sing of salvation for ever and ever

Matt. xi, 28.

COME, ye weary sinners, come,

All, who feel your heavy load:

Jesus calls the wand'rers home;
Hasten to your pard'ning God:
Come, ye guilty souls oppressed,
Answer to the Saviour's call:
"Come, and I, will give you rest:
Come, and I will save you all."
e 2 Jesus, full of truth and love,
We thy kindest call obey,
Faithful let thy mercies prove,
Take our load of guilt away:
Weary of this war within,
Weary of this endless strife,
Weary of ourselves and sin,
Weary of a wretched life.

p 3 Burdened with a world of grief,
Burdened with our sinful load,
Burdened with this unbelief,
Burdened with the wrath of God,
o Lo, we come to thee for ease,
True and gracious as thou art;
Now our weary souls release,
Write forgiveness on our heart.

VILLAGE HYMNS.

Park Street. [b]

"Return unto me.”

RETURN, O wanderer, return!

And seek thine injured Father's face :

Those new desires which in thee burn, Were kindled by reclaiming grace. 2 Return, O wanderer, return! e He hears thy deep repentant sigh: He sees thy softened spirit mourn, When no intruding ear is nigh. 3 Return, O wanderer, return! Thy Saviour bids thy spirit live: Go to his feet; and grateful, learn How freely Jesus can forgive. 84 Return, O wanderer, return! And wipe away the falling tear : Thy Father calls " No longer mourn!" "Tis mercy's voice invites thee near.

A Fountain opened for Sin and Uncleanness.

81 COME to Calvary's holy mountain,

Sinners, ruined by the fall;

Here a pure and healing fountain
Flows to you, to me, to all.

e 2 Come, in sorrow and contrition,
Wounded, impotent, and blind;
Here the guilty, free remission, ́ ́
Here the troubled, peace may find."
3 He that drinks shall live for ever;
'Tis a soul-renewing flood:

God is faithful;-God will never

Break his covenant in blood.

HYMN 310. L. M. Angels' Hymn. [*]

1

"Take not thy Holy Spirit," &c. Ps. li, 11.

STAY, thou insulted Spirit, stay,

Though I have done thee such despite,

Cast not the sinner quite away,

Nor take thine everlasting flight.

-2 Though I have most unfaithful been
Of all, whoe'er thy grace received,
Ten thousand times thy goodness seen,
Ten thousand times thy goodness grieved,-

[ocr errors]

3 Yet oh, the chief of sinners spare, In honour of my great High Priest; Nor in thy righteous anger swear, I shall not see thy people's rest. -4 If yet thou canst my sins forgive, E'en now, O Lord, relieve my woes; Into thy rest of love receive,

And bless me with the calm repose. -5 E'en now my weary soul release, And raise me by thy gracious hand! Guide me into thy perfect peace, And bring me to the promised land.

HYMN 311. C. M. Canterbury. [b]

The Penitent.

Р 1 PROSTRATE, O Jesus, at thy feet, guilty rebel lies,

p

And upwards to the mercy-seat
Presumes to lift his eyes.

2 If tears of sorrow would suffice

To pay the debt I owe,

[ocr errors]

Tears should from both my weeping eyes
In ceaseless torrents flow.

3 But no such sacrifice I plead,

To expiate my guilt;

No tears but those which thou hast shed,
No blood but thou hast spilt.

4 Think of thy sorrows, dearest Lord,
And all my sins forgive;

Then Justice will approve the word
That bids the sinner live.

MFor mercy, Lord, 1 cry:

Jesus, Redeemer, show thy face
In mercy, or I die.

At thy command I tread,

With failing steps, life's stormy wave,

The wave goes o'er my head.
