be committed to the flames. This is all her comfort. Death is, indeed, to her "the king of terrors." But when the believer in Christ departs, these are the words whispered into his ear by that Saviour who has died. for his sins and risen again for his justification: " Thy friend, thy sister, thy brother, thy husband shall rise again.”

Let me, then, in conclusion, lead you once more to this blessed Redeemer, even to Him who "has brought life and immortality to light by the Gospel." Behold him as He appeared when on his way from beyond Jordan to Bethany. He was then coming to awake his friend Lazarus. He is now about to come for the same purpose. The forbearance of God, and his unwillingness "that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance, may lead him for a little space to do as he did when Martha and Mary first sent to Him :-"He then abode two days still in the same place where he was." But though he tarry, wait for him; he will surely come, he will not tarry."

Follow the steps therefore of Martha, and

go forth to meet him, especially now that "the signs of the times " bring to our remembrance that emphatic warning of our Saviour, "Behold I come as a thief; blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments." Do not as Martha did, when she first met our Lord, complain of his dealings, or dwell upon second causes. Say not, as she said, "Lord, if thou hadst been here my brother had not died." But seek for that blessed hope which the sight of our Saviour put into her heart, when she thus expressed her confidence, "I know that, even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee."

Remember there is nothing impossible with him no cup so bitter that he cannot sweeten; no dispensation so dark that he cannot brighten; no malady so severe that he cannot heal; yea, no loss so great that he cannot more than supply. Therefore trust in Him. Take also the strong consolation He gives, "Thy brother shall rise again." Yet a little while only, my

beloved brethren, and those over whom of you may now be mourning, shall rise from their graves: "This corruptible shall put on incorruption, and this mortal shall put on immortality." Not only so, but let this blessed truth, that God will raise the dead, assure you that he can deliver you from every other trial. Remember the animating words of the Apostle, "What shall we say to these things, if God be for us who can be against us ?" "It is Christ that died, yea, rather that has risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us."

But I must now stop, intending, if the Lord enables me, to continue the subject this evening.

In the mean time, let me invite you to partake of that sacred feast, in which we are keeping up the remembrance of our Lord's death till he come. Oh may He, who graciously came to Bethany to raise Lazarus, now come and raise our souls upon the wings of faith and love; that when he comes

again to raise the dead, and to change the living, we may be enabled to say, “This is our God, we have waited for him, and he will save us this is the Lord, we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation."

LECTURE X.

JOHN Xi. 24—27.

"Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life : he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world."

LET us now proceed with that part of the interesting narrative in which we were engaged this morning. We then heard our Lord, in answer to Martha's confident expression of her hope, giving to her this consolatory reply, "Thy brother shall rise again."
