whom alone all the Promifes are made good to us ; and upon the Holy Spirit the Comforter, that through his powerful influences we may rightly understand and apply, firmly believe, and clearly discover the excellency of the Promifes, and fo tafte that the Lord is gracious.

Conftantly plead the Promifes with God in prayer. He has thereby bound himself to his people, as with a note under his hand. Go with it therefore to God, firmly depending upon his faithfulness; he will acknowledge his own hand-writing, and anfwer your demands accordingly. Reft yourself therefore upon God, and wait patiently for him, being affured he will not be unmindful of his promife; but leave it to his infinite wisdom to fulfil it, in that way, and at that time, he fees best.

But remember the Promises of God do not difcharge from, but encourage and oblige to, the diligent ufe of all proper and lawful means. Chrift has promised food and raiment ; but the flothful and careless must not expect the benefit of that Promife. The fame may be faid of the fpiritual bleflings promifed. The foul of the flothful defireth, and bath nothing; but the foul of the diligent fhall be made fat, Prov. xiii. 4.

To conclude: Let the Christian live a life of faith upon the Promifes. A great part of the riches of the nation at this day, confifts in the credit that is given to notes, bonds, affignments, &c. I am fure the riches of the Chriftian lie chiefly in the affignments he has under God's hand, of the most valuable bleffings both of this and a better life. Let him then know how to value these as the trueft riches, and to make use of them upon all occafions; he will find no want of any good thing. If he has it not in hand, he has it in the promife ready whenever he needs it. So that he may live entirely free from folicitude and


anxious care, committing himself, and all his concerns to that God who careth for him.

I am willing to take this opportunity of recommending it to thofe young perfons, for whose benefit this Collection was firft undertaken, to persevere in their endeavours to improve themselves, and one another, in the knowledge of the Promifes, and other parts of scripture, which may be most useful to them, that the word of Chrift may dwell in them richly in all wisdom; and to others, especially of their age, to imitate their example in the fame commendable way of employing their time. To how much better account will this turn, than the vanities that ordinarily fill up the converfation of youth, or thofe wrangling difputes and controverfies, which eat out the heart of ferious practical religion! The advantage which those who have tried this courfe have reaped from it, fufficiently encourages their perfeverance in it. May they, and all others who with them delight in, and fearch after, the treasures of divine wisdom in the fcriptures, not only have their minds beautified and enriched with it, but feel its influence in their hearts and lives. May they be filled with the knowledge of the will of God, in all wisdom and fpiritual underftanding, that they may walk worthy of the Lord, unto all pleafing, being fruitful in every good work, and increafing in the knowledge of God.
