Thou my Keeper and my guide,
Make me ftill thy tender Care,
Gently lead me by thy fide,
Sweetly in thy bofom bear.
5. Thou art my daily Bread;
O Chrift, thou art my Head!
Motion, virtue, ftrength to me,
Me thy living member flow;
Nourish'd I and fed by thee,
Up to Thee in all things grow.
6. Prophet, to me reveal
Thy Father's perfect will.
Never mortal fpake like thee,
Human prophet like divine;
Loud.and ftrong their voices be,
Small and ftill and inward thine.
7. On thee my Priest I call,
Thy Blood aton'd for all.
Still the Lamb as slain appears,
. Still thou ftand'ft before the throne
Ever off ring up thy Pray'rs,
Mine presenting with thy own.
8. Jefu, thou art my King,
From thee my ftrength I bring!
Shadow'd by thy mighty Hand,
Saviour, who shall pluck me
thence?

Faith fupports, by Faith I ftand,
Strong as thy Omnipotence.

3. Thee I exult to feel,

Thou in my Heart doft dwell: There thou bear'ft thy witness true, Shed'ft the Love of God abroad; I in Chrift a Creature new,

I, ev'n I am born of God. 4. Ere yet the time was come To fix in me thy Home, With me oft thou didst refide: Now, my God, thou in me art! Here thou ever fhalt abide; One we are, no more to part. 5. Fruit of the Saviour's pray'r, My promised Comforter! Thee the World cannot receive,

Thee they neither know nor fee; Dead is all the life they live, Dark their light, while void of thee.

6. Yet I partake thy grace Thro' Chrift my righteousness: Mine the gifts thou doft impart,

Mine the Unction from above, Pardon written on my heart,

Light, and life, and joy, and love. 7. Thy gifts, bleft Paraclete, Í glory to repeat: Sweetly fure of Grace I am,

Pardon to my foul apply'd, Int'reft in the spotlefs Lamb; Dead for all, for me he dy'd. 8. Thou art thyself the Seal; I more than pardon feel, Peace, unutterable peace,

Joy that ages ne'er can move, Faith's affurance, Hope's increase, All the confidence of Love.

9. Pledge of the Promife giv'n ! My antepaft of Heav'n, Earnest thou of joys divine,

Joys divine on me bestow'd; Heav'n and Christ and all is mine, All the plenitude of God.

10. Thou art my inward Guide, I ask no help befide: Arm of God, to thee I call;

[blocks in formation]

Weak as helpless infancy, Weak I am, yet cannot fall,

Stay'd by Faith, and led by Thee.

654.

Fully am I juftify'd,

Free from fin, and more than free;
Guiltlefs, fince for me he dy'd,
Righteous, fince he liv'd for me!
8. Jefu! to thee I bow,
Sav'd to the utmost now.

IS done! my God hath O the depth of Love divine!

1.9 Tdied,

My Love is crucify'd.
Break, this ftony heart of mine!

Pour my eyes a ceafelefs flood,
Feel, my foul, the Pangs divine,
Catch,my heart, the issuing Blood!
2. To love is all my wish,

[ocr errors]

I only live for this:
Grant me, Lord, my Heart's defire.
There by Faith for ever dwell;
This I always will require

Thee and only thee to feel. 3. Ah! give me this to know

With all thy faints below: Swells my foul to compafs Thee, Gafps in thee to live and move, Fill'd with all the Deity,

All immerst and loft in Love! 4. His would I wholly be

Who liv'd and died for me!
Grief was all his Life below,
Pain and Poverty and loss :
Mine the Sins that bruis'd him fo,

5.

Who thy Wisdom's stores can tell? Knowledge infinite is thine,

All thy Ways unsearchable!
9. Worthy, O Lord, art thou

That ev'ry Knee should bow,
Every tongue to thee confefs;
Univerfal Nature join
Strong and mighty thee to blefs,
Gracious, merciful, benign!
10. Hail your dread Lord and ours,
Dominions, Thrones and pow'rs!
Source of Pow'r he rules alone:

Veil your eyes, and proftrate fall,
Cf your crowns before his Throne,
il the Cause, the Lord of all!
11. Juftice and Truth maintain
Thy everlasting Reign.
One with thine Almighty Sire,

Partner of an equal Throne,
King of Hearts, let all confpire,
Gratefully thy Sway to own.
12. Thee when the Dragon's pride
To battle vain defy'd;

Scourg'd and nail'd him to the Brighter than the morning-ftar,

Crofs.

He bore the curfe of all,
A fpotless Criminal:
Burden'd with a World of guilt,

Blacken'd with imputed fin,
Man to fave, his Blood he split,

Died, to make the finner clean. 6. Join earth and heav'n to blefs

The LORD our Righteousness! Sinn'd we all, and died in one? Juft in One we all are made, Chrift the Law fulfill'd alone,

Dy'd for all, for all obey'd. 7. In him compleat we shine, His Death, his life is mine.

Lucifer as lightning fell,
Far from Heav'n, from glory far
Headlong hurl'd to deepest Hell.
13. Sin felt one time thy Pow'r,

Thou patient Conqueror !
Long he vex'd the World below,
Long they groan'd beneath his
reign;
Thou destroy'dft the tyrant Foe,

Thou redeem'ft the captive, Man. 14. Trembles the King of fears

Whene'er thy Crofs appears; Once its dreaded Force he found : Saviour, cleave again the sky; Slain by an eternal wound,

Death shall then for ever die !

15. Jefu, thou art our King,
To me thy Succour bring.
Chrift the Mighty one art thou,
Help for all on thee is laid: *
This the Word; I claim it now,
Send me down the promis'd Aid.
* Pf. lxxxix. 19. Ifa. lxiii. 1.

And spread thy Victory:
Hell and death, and Sin controul,
Pride and Self, and ev'ry foe ;

Bba, Father! hear thy Child Late in Jefus reconcil'd! Hear, and all the Graces fhower, All the joy, and peace, and pow'r, All my Saviour asks above,

All the life and heaven of Love.
2. Heavenly Adam, Life divine,
Change my Nature into Thine:
Move and fpread throughout my
Soul,

Actuate and fill the whole :
Be it I no longer now,
Living in the Flesh, but Thou.
3. Holy Ghost, no more delay,
Come, and in thy Temple stay;
Now thy inward Witness bear
Strong and permanent, and clear;
Spring of Life, thyself impart,
Rife eternal in

2. Mofes, thou fent of God declare,
How paffedft thou to ceaseless rest?
Ifaiah, David, let me hear,
How from the World ye were re-
leas'd?

And Job and Jeremiah, say,
How kept ye in the narrow Way?
3. Shew, O thou highly-favour'd
Bard,

Who, borne in fiery Chariot rode
To Jefu's feaft, and disappear'd
Below, to banquet with his God:
How were thy Days with mortals
spent,

Ere thou waft call'd from banishment ?

4. And thou fair Hebrew Captive, well Efteem'd in Babel's stately court, Greatly beloved Daniel, tell How thou obtain'dft the heav'nly Port?

And let thy fellows, princely wife,
Relate their way to Paradife.
5. Chief Minifter to Gentiles fent,
Once Perfecutor of the Faith
Of Chrift, whofe days so much were
spent

In doing good, describe the Path
Which led thee to the fhining Prize,
And landed thee in pureft skies.
6. Could I amidft th' angelic choir,
Like favour'd John, to heaven foar;
Of ev'ry Saint would I enquire,
How they attain'd that happy Shoar?
They all (to John the word was
giv❜n)

4. Simplicity knows of no glory,
But that, which is in Jefu's Blood.
The foolish Honour transitory
Is by the heav'nly Thirst fubdu'd.
In a pure Child of God, the splendor
Of God's Name is diftinctly feen;
How then fhou'd it again furrender
To trash and foolishness terrene?
5. Of Cares and manifold diftreffes,
Which are the Worldlings daily

cant,

Of Envy, which so many teazes,
Simplicity is ignorant:

She keeps her excellent Heart-trea fure,

Maugre black envy's fullen spight ; And if fome one wou'd fhare her pleasure,

She does not grudge, 'tis her delight, 6. A heart that does a likeness carry Of Chrift's Simplicity, how bright! Ye foolish Virgins, you may tarry Till overtaken by the Night: Lamps without Oil and Chrift's mind fingle,

What do they profit? then be wise, And Chrift and World no longer mingle,

But from your heart the world defpife.

Thy fingle Mind into my heart:
Root out the World's infatuation
Tho' it be done with fharpest

Th' old Dragon's image I have scorned,

I wear it no more; now let me, With true fimplicity adorned,

As a new Creature, live to thee.

Therefore I am onward running To this Fountain in full speed. 6 All the worldly Lufts which perifh,

As fo many poifon'd dainties,

While I fojourn in the Defart, Till the Father's houfe I've found. 7. For thou art my only Confort; My Redeemer, Benefactor,

All in all I find in thee:

For what else can give me comfort?

Full of Pleasure and delight;
While in thee my Soul is feeding,
I want nothing, I'm provided,
And I am contented quite.
3. When thou doft reveal thy Powers,
O how mighty, how all-conqu'ring
Do they overpow'r the heart!

In Fears, in tears, in sweat and Gore;
Was tempted, was betray'd and fold,
Led prifoner, and kept in hold,

this Scene?

That he and I might rife again
In one divine fimilitude;
And Love, thro' likeness be renew`d,

Ere fince my Saviour was made fin
