8. If any (be he who he will)
Dragging in darkness all the while,
Of fuch a harmony did vaunt,
He uprightness and truth would want.
9 But he who walketh in the light,
Wherein God dwells, by holy Writ;
Chorus.

(0 Chrift, who art the Day fo pure, Fore whom the night cannot endure!) 10. Already liveth fuch a one With him; and the blood of his Son , From all fin cleanfes, and makes

white,

Whoe'er is in that cov'nant right. 11. If a believer, let him be Whoe'er he will, fays, he is free From having 'bout him fin, he lyes: There's no truth in him, one here fpies.

12. If gladly we our fin confefs, We've fuch a Lord in readiness, Of whom we know, he faithful is, And that he's the juft one likewife; 13. So that he us th' offences all Forgives,and from things we must call Not right, of all kinds, us befide Does by his Cleanfing help and rid. 14. If any ev'n of us fhould fay, He could no fin t' his own charge lay;

He him a lyar wou'd declare, And were from having God's word far.

15. This is faid to you, children dear! First, that to no fin ye give ear: Yet if one finds, he has stepp'd in Into fome thing; deceiv'd by fin; 16. Then there's one with the Fa

ther near,

Who's Advocate in our affair,
His name's Chrift Jefus, who's in-

deed

May fly to, and not they alone, But the World's finners ev'ry one. 18. How then can it be understood, That we've him rightly known and view'd?

The token's this, when we his Will Do now with all our heart fulfill. 19. Thou of him knowledge haft (forfooth)

Yet doft not do his will in truth: Thou art a lyar, take my word: To think truth's in thee, were abfurd. 20. But he who doth what's Jefu's will,

And 'bides obedient to him still;
I think, in this man Love's decree

May be faid perfected to be.

21. Hereby we quickly can perceive, How far we in him dwell and live: Who fays this, the fame Path mut take,

Wherein the Lord was feen to walk. 22. Now, brethren, let none fancy here,

As if this but fome new law were ; 'Tis alfo th' old Rule, if you trace, Which in the first beginning was. 23. The old rule plainly is the fame, But 'tis become with you now true, Which long ago to your ears came : As 'twas with God; and hence ftyl'd

He at none tumbles, 'tis well known, | 34. The world and all its appetite
Shall foon be abrogated quite;
But he abides, who doth God's Will,
Here and for ever bleffed ftill.

And cause of stumbling gives to none. 27. But he who doth his brother hate, Shut up in darkness is his state, He gropes, and knows not where he goes,

'Caufe films before his eyes have rofe. II.

28. Dear children! you know clear,

very

Thro' whofe means we abfolved are. 36. Out of God's church they forth

do fpring:

Were they her members? no fuch thing;

For if this e'er had been their case, They would throughout adorn the grace.

37.

Now here it was once to appear, That they not all of our train were. But ye've got from the Holy one An unction, all is to you known. 38. I've not wrote to you from fuch thought,

As were you to the Truth not brought,

But 'caufe you know it,and know too, That no lye from the Truth does flow.

39. Who is a lyar, if one weighs The thing? 'tis he who thinks and fays,

Jefus not the Meffiah is.
The Antichrift's precifely this.
40, Both Son and Father he denies :
For he who doth the Son defpife,
Can't have the Father; but who'll

:

That we may, when he comes one
day,

To meet him go most chearfully,
Nor forc'd to blush before him be.

47. Soon as ye this have clearly
known,

That Chrift's the only righteous one, Then you know too, that none, unlefs

Out of him born, doth righteousness. 48. See, what love-proofs the Father yields

1 To us, that we're God's Children ftyl'd!

The World of you no notion has, And why? it does not know his face. 49. Now dear hearts! we're God's

children bleft,

And what we shall be, God knows

beft.

Chorus.

(To th' Lamb be thanks eternal paid! Something to God he us hath made.)

[ocr errors]

50. Mean while we have been told thus much,

That when again he fhall approach, Our look fhall then be just like his, Because we've seen him, as he is. 51. Now he who fees before him

clear

This hope toward the Bridegroom fair,

Shakes himself clean, bids duft depart,

As Chrift himself's a cleanly Heart.
Chorus.

(Lord God! awake us, that when he
Thy dear Son comes, we ready be
Till then heart's fervice to thee give.
With thoufand joys him to receive,

V.

52. When one in Sin doth rest and live, God's will's not kept, you may believe;

Doth fin ftill in us tyrannize? This thing itself tranfgreffion is. 53. We know that Jesus Christ once

came

For this especial end and aim,
That our fin alfo he away
Might take; He finlefs was alway.
54. Who into him does fly and twine,
He certainly does not work fin ;
Whoever fins, has ne'er aright
Of him experience got or fight.

Dear children! let none you de-
ceive :

55.
He that as righteous will behave,
Muft righteous be as Chrift indeed,
Who is of this thing the Spring-head.
That he is of the Devil's race,
56. Whoever lives in fin, betrays,
Who fins, fince he the devil is:
To break his works, Chrift left the

that

For aid, and canft it coldly fee,
How will God's love fubfift in thee?

66. My children! your love not in
found

Or in tongue's doings must abound;
Sincerely love*, fhew it in deed,

Us any way, as not being right;
Then have we confidence 'fore God

The bad world you doth fomewhat | (Thro' his five holy wounds and blood.)

pafs'd o'er :

It by this token prov'd can be, We love the brethren heartily. * Joh. v. 24.

63. Who loves not them, in death
does 'bide,

To hate's by God as murder ey'd.
And ye know, how this always was:
A murd'rer's life hangs in bad cafe.
64. Herein God's love itself did fhew,
He did his life for us bestow;
And so we too should not be shy,
For the dear brethren's fake to die.
65. If thou haft fubftance where-
withal,

And feest thy brother's needs do call

70. And when we'd fomething from him have,

(Since they are things 'bout which he gave

Command, and we, as he doth choose,
Would do them) he'll us nought re-
fufe.

71. His chief Command is :
Chorus.

74. Beloved! truft no spirit straight, Prove first, if God them actuate? Into the world is many a Seer Gone forth, who th' right stamp does not bear.

75. The Sprit from God by this you'll know,

When free a spirit doth allow,
That the Child Jefus is the Chrift;
That fp'rit's of God, you're then
appriz'd.

76. But if a fp'rit likes not to own,
Jefus the Child is Chrift; alone
By this you know, he's not of God,
Antichrift's fpirit him conclude.
77. That this fhall come, you've

heard long fince,

He's now in the world, figns evince. Ye Children! are from God; herein

O'er their cabal you've victors been. 78. Your fpirit is than that more

ftrong,

That worldly, to which they belong; They and the world one fpeech do

ufe ; Therefore the world their lore doth choose.

81. Ye who love not, don't know

God fure,

Elfe you'd fee, God is Love all o'er. Chorus.

(For Love his element is fill;
Faithful is prov'd his Heart and Will)
82. This love's hereby to us made
clear,

His Son th' only begotten dear
He'd into this world fend and give,
That we thro' him henceforth might
live.

83. And as to love, the cafe is fo,
Not our love fo to God did glow;
No, he loves us, and fends his Child
To be our fins atonement mild.
84. Beloved! hath God us fo lov'd!
Us with like impulfe to be mov'd
To love each other, would befeem:
For none faw God at any time;
85. Yet if we lov'd each other well,
'Twould follow, God did in us dwell;
And his love on and in us right
Be brought to its fulfilment might.
86. For thereby we're ourselves

aware

We under one roof with him are,
And he with us Abode does make,
When of his Spirit we partake.
87. But we have perfonally feen,
And do as real fact maintain,
That God the Father his Son fent,
And for the world's redemption fpent.

79. Us, who're of God, who knows 88. And whofo roundly fhall aver,

God, hears,

And who from him turns not his ears. So much of this; ev'n how one fpies What Truth's or Error's spirit is. VIII.

80. Beloved! love each other much; Love comes from God, we can

avouch :

Who loveth, God hath him begot, And in God's knowledge he's well taught.

That Jefus is God's Son most dear; With him will God an inmate be, And he'll be of God's family. 89. The love which God to us hath fhewn,

This we believed have and known; God is love; who therein abides, He in God, God in him refides. 90. This is the reason, why ev'n here

Love's working fo brings it to bear, H 3
