VER. 16.

Ἐν τούτῳ δὲ αὐτὸς ἀσκῶ, ἀπρόσκοπον συνείδησιν ἔχειν πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν καὶ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους διαπαντός.

And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

VER. 17.

Δι ̓ ἐτῶν δὲ πλειόνων παρεγενόμην ἐλεη μοσύνας ποιήσων εἰς τὸ ἔθνος μου, καὶ προσφοράς.

Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings.

A But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints. For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem, Rom. xv. 25, 26.

VER. 18.

Εν οἷς εὗρόν με ηγνισμένον ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ, οὐ μετὰ ὄχλου, οὐδὲ μετὰ θορύβου, τινὲς δὲ ἀπὸ τῆς ̓Ασίας Ἰουδαῖοι·

Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult.

a Then Paul took the men; and the next day purifying himself with them, entered into the temple, to signify the accomplishment of the days of purifcation, until that an offering should be offered for every one of them. And when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews which were of Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the people, and laid hands on him, crying out, Men of Israel, help: this is the man that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further, brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place, Acts xxi. 26-28.

VER. 19.

Οὓς δεῖ ἐπὶ σοῦ παρεῖναι, καὶ κατηγορεῖν εἴ τι ἔχοιεν πρός με.

Μετὰ δὲ ἡμέρας τινὰς παραγενόμενος ὁ Φήλιξ σὺν Δρουσίλλῃ τῇ γυναικὶ αὐτοῦ, οὔση Ἰουδαία, μετεπέμψατο τὸν Παῦλον, καὶ ἤκουσεν αὐτοῦ περὶ τῆς εἰς Χριστὸν πίστεως.

And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard Who ought to have been here before him concerning the faith in Christ.

ACTS XXIV. 25-27,-xxv. 1—4.

VER. 25.

Διαλεγομένου δὲ αὐτοῦ περὶ δικαιοσύνης καὶ ἐγκρατείας καὶ τοῦ κρίματος τοῦ μέλο λοντος ἔσεσθαι, ἔμφοβος γενόμενος ὁ Φήλιξ ἀπεκρίθη· Τὸ νῦν ἔχον πορεύουν καιρὸν δὲ μεταλαβὼν μετακαλέσομαί σε·

And as he reasoned of a righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

a It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness; for the throne is established by righteousness, Prον. xvi. 12. Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity, Dan. iv. 27. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness, is righteous even as he is righteous, 1 John iii. 7.

b Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for sings to drink wine, nor for princes strong drink; lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted, Prov. xxxi. 3-5. And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness : now their own doings have beset them about; they are before face. They my make the king glad with their wicked ness, and the princes with their lies. They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceaseth from raising after he hath kneaded the dough until it be leavened. In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine: he stretched out his hands with

scorners, Hos. vii. 2-5. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us, that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world, Tit. ii. 11, 12. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge tempérance, 2 Pet. i. 5, 6.

̓Απορούμενος δὲ ἐγὼ εἰς τὴν περὶ τούτου ζήτησιν, ἔλεγον, εἰ βούλοιτο πορεύεσα θαι εἰς ̔Ιερουσαλὴμ, κακεῖ κρίνεσθαι περὶ τούτων.

And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.

A. D. 62.

σιν, ἐκέλευσα τηρεῖσθαι αὐτὸν, ἕως οὗ πέμψω αὐτὸν πρὸς Καίσαρα.

But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Cæsar.

VER. 22.

̓Αγρίππας δὲ πρὸς τὸν φῆστον ἔφη· Ἐβουλόμην καὶ αὐτὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀκοῦ

σαι.

Ὁ δέ· Αύριον, φησὶν, ἀκούσῃ αὐτοῦ.

Then Agrippa said unto Festus, [ would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.

VER. 23.

Τῇ οὖν ἐπαύριον ἐλθόντος τοῦ ̓Αγρίππα καὶ τῆς Βερνίκης μετὰ πολλῆς φαντασίας, καὶ εἰσελθόντων εἰς τὸ ἀκροατήριον σύν τε τοῖς χιλιάρχοις, καὶ ἀνδράσι τοῖς κατ' ἐξοχὴν οὖσι τῆς πόλεως, καὶ κελεύσαντος τοῦ φῆστου, ἤχθη ὁ Παῦλος.

And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus' commandment Paul was brought forth.

VER. 24.

Καί φησιν ὁ Φῆστος· ̓Αγρίππα βασιλεῦ, καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαρόντες ἡμῖν πλῆθος τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐνέτυχόν μοι ἔν τε ἄνδρες, θεωρεῖτε τοῦτον περὶ οὗ πᾶν τὸ Ἱεροσολύμοις, καὶ ἐνθάδε, ἐπιβοῦντες μὴ δεῖν τὴν αὐτὸν μηκέτι.

And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.

VER. 45.

Ἐγὼ δὲ καταλαβόμενος μηδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου αὐτὸν πεπραχέναι, καὶ αὐτοῦ δὲ τούτου ἐπικαλεσαμένου τὸν Σεβαστόν, ἔκρινα πέμπειν αὐτόν·

But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and

Τοῦ δὲ Παύλου ἐπικαλεσαμένου τηρη

tus, I have determined to send him.

Περὶ οὗ ἀσφαλές τι γράψει την κυρία

θῆναι αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν τοῦ Σεβαστοῦ διάγνω. Γ οὐκ ἔχω. Διὸ προήγαγον αὐτὸν ἐφ' ὑμῶν,

καὶ μάλιστα ἐπὶ σοῦ, βασιλεῦ ̓Αγρίππα, ὅπως τῆς ἀνακρίσεως γενομένης, σχῶ τι γράψαι.

of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have

somewhat to write.

VER. 27.

*Αλογον γάρ μοι δοκεῖ, πέμποντα δέσε μιον, μὴ καὶ τὰς κατ ̓ αὐτοῦ αἰτίας σημᾶναι.

For it seemeth to me unreasonable to

Προγινώσκοντές με ἄνωθεν, (ἐὰν θέλωσι μαρτυρεῖν, ὅτι κατὰ τὴν ἀκριβεστάτην αἵρεσιν τῆς ἡμετέρας θρησκείας ἔζησα Φαρισαῖος.

Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. VER. 6.

Καὶ νῦν ἐπ ̓ ἐλπίδι τῆς πρὸς τοὺς πατέ ρας ἐπαγγελίας γενομένης ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἕστηκα κρινόμενος"

send a prisoner, and not withal to signify for the hope of the promise made of God And now I stand and am judged the crimes laid against him.

CHAP. XXVI. —VER. 1. ̓Αγρίππας δὲ πρὸς τὸν Παῦλον ἔφη· Επιτρέπεταί σοι ὑπὲρ σεαυτοῦ λέγειν. Τότε ὁ Παῦλος ἀπελογεῖτο ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα·

Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself:

VER. 2.

Περὶ πάντων ὧν ἐγκαλοῦμαι ὑπὸ Ἰουδαίων, βασιλεῦ ̓Αγρίππα, ἥγημαι ἐμαυ τὸν μακάριον, μέλλων ἀπολογεῖσθαι ἐπὶ σου σήμερον

I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee, touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews:

VER. 3.

Μάλιστα γνώστην ὄντα σε πάντων τῶν κατὰ Ἰουδαίους ἐθῶν τε καὶ ζητημάτων, διὸ δέομαί σου, μακροθύμως ἀκοῦσαί

μου.

Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.

VER. 4.

Τὴν μὲν οὖν βίωσίν μου τὴν ἐκ νεότητος, τὴν ἀπ ̓ ἀρχῆς γενομένην ἐν τῷ ἔθνει μου ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις, ἴσασι πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι

* My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews ; See on chap. xxii. ver. 3.

unto our fathers :

VER. 7.

Εἰς ἦν τὸ δωδεκάφυλον ἡμῶν ἐν ἐκτενείᾳ νύκτα καὶ ἡμέραν λατρεῦον ἐλπίζει καταν τῆσαι· περὶ ἧς ἐλπίδος ἐγκαλοῦμαι, βα σιλεῦ ̓Αγρίππα, ὑπὸ τῶν Ἰουδαίων.

Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God * day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews, • Gr. night and day. VER. 8.

Τί ἄπιστον κρίνεται παρ' ὑμῖν, εἰ ὁ Θεὸς νεκροὺς ἐγείρει ;

Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead ?
