after clap or sting, equals, or rather over ballances the pleafing fenfations even in this life; the pleasure momentary, remorfe long and tedious; fo that according to the golden rule, which is never to regret or difturb one's felf for what is paft, or what is not arrived; but grasp, gripe, and scramble for what is fubftantial, which is what can be felt, that is the prefent; this is fubftantial philofophy, and which cannot be enjoyed with impunity, without firft fecluding the fpiritual part that beats at the door of the heart, by which spiritual philofophy you are at all times, if the body is in good plight, ready, alert, brisk, lively, nimble, and upon the watch as a cat to fpring on your prey, of what kind is not material, the fenfes are your guide where ever the inclination points, obedience is at command; our cloth it was thought advifeable fhould take the fair fex under our immediate tuition; they have made a furprizing progrefs; our bright day has difplayed its rays on their quick conceptions with great refulgence, fo that they rival their fond mates, and give grace with gratification to our enamoured wishes we enjoy, whilft they make large ftrides in the new philofophy, whofe theme is pleasure and gratification, our true devotion: this string tickles the cockles of my heart; fouls we have none, like phantoms they disappear before the brightness of our wifdom. O thrice happy enlightened age.

Hoft. I am told they copy Sodom and Gomorrah in feafting on unnatural luft; that you have brothels or ftews for fodomy or male gal

lantry; thefe fparks of the higher rank term this flice of their new philofophy, refinement on the paffion, and quinteffence of the touch. It is not a new philofophy. I will though an illiterate Swifs, hold up to the world your diabolical philofophy to fcorn, and that it has ever been exploded even from the time of our father Abraham. In the the 19th chapter of Genefis you will find perhaps your original. "There came two angels to Sodom at even, and Lot fat in the gate of Sodom, and feeing them rofe up to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face towards the ground, and faid, my lords turn in 1 prey you, into your fervants house, and lodge to-night; and he preffed on them greatly, and they went in with him. But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sódom, encompaffed the house, both old and young, all the people from every quarter; and they called unto Lot, and faid, where are the men which came to thee this night, bring them out to us that we may know them; (a common phrafe in fcripture to lie with another) and Lot faid, I pray you brethren, do not fo wickedly; I have two daughters which have not known man; let me I pray you bring them out unto you, and do you to them as is good in your eyes; only to these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the fhaddow of my roof. But they faid, stand back, and they faid again, this one fellow came in to fojourn, and he will needs be a judge; now will we deal worfe with thee than with them; and they preffed fore upon Lot, and came near

to break the door; but the men put forth their hands, and pulled Lot into the house and fhut the door; and they fmote the men with blindnefs, both fmall and great, fo that they wearied themselves to find the door."

We will now fee the end of your new philofophy as foon as Lot and his daughters was fafe; then the Lord rained upon Sodom and "upon Gomorrah, brimftone and fire; and he overthrew those cities, and that that grew upon the ground, as a pledge to pofterity. Your original monument bears teftimony at this day to the wickedness of your fociety; the ground on which this unnatural and filthy, which you term enlightened philofophy, was perpetrated, is a lake or puddle of ftench; it is unfathomable to dive to the bottom, how far the creature, throwing off his duty to his creator, and the respect he owes his own fuperior nature, is capable; of thefe even the above is a standing monitor; therefore I advise you take warning, reverend doctor, and in future inculcate both to yourself and others, your double duty; pray who is the happy, the good man, or monfter? a man that will not acknowledge his God, is not worthy to be permitted among beafts.

Luther. Nincompoop, you degrade the philofopher's stone, that turns all things into gold; don't you observe the golden rule which has raised the fabric of our philofophy, which has given the glorious title to this our age, "The enlightened age, O brilliant, O jewel of ineftimable value, when fhall I be in full and quiet. poffeffion, and me and no other, drowned in

your charms? The great and fupreme Father, Dictator and Legiflator, of our enlightened age, the most fupernal, glorious, herculean and heroic Voltaire, after fettling his kingdom of light, and swelling every space, during the courfe of fourfcore years with new acts of heroism, far outftripping all of the celeftial community, on the eve of his departure outflept himself. A legacy he thought fit in his great wisdom to leave his fons and daughters for their guide, and an example to all future ages, that contemplating this fupreme act that fealed the life of that prodigy, they may in the fullness of will fit down with that great man and partake of the moft delicious, favoury, rich, strong banquet, filling the conception with the odour of fovereign delight. O great champion of light, who knowing no other but yourself, was worthy of yourself, fed upon yourself; this great act publishes to the world Voltaire lived and died Voltaire: for, dear brethren, when the hour approached the he fhould lofe his wind, while one arm grappled with the parting breath, the other's extafy of delight was busy in the closeftool pan, feafting himself as heartily and with that keen appetite he at times enjoyed. He knew the world was not worthy to poffefs the leaft particle of his exquifite excellency. So be it. I have laid before ye an example of greatnefs; go and do fo, and leave me to enjoy a nap.

Notaries.

Mafes. Welcome, my young friend, this meeting is truly cordial, as we fhall now confider fome parts in our laft that have impreffed my mind, I mean the different paffages, of fcripture relating to the divinity of the Meffiah.

Boy. The divinity of the Meffiah is declared throughout the fcriptures, beginning with the first of Genefis and finishing with the end of your prophets.

Mofes. I confefs the mystery staggers and greatly oppreffes my fpirits; my whole life has been anxiously defirous of knowledge and fearching out truth; but never found myself plunged in the maze of difficulties and labyrinths of impenetrable depths, which are unfearchable and paft finding out.

Boy. The grace of the Almighty alone can remove your darkness and place you in his prefence, when the fcriptures will unfold themfelves, dark paffages and feeming contrarieties will bear one pleafing afpect of coincidence and argument.

Mofes. The old covenant inculcated one God; but no diftinction of perfons. Your's agree with us in the unity of fubftance, that is, one God, in three perfons: here lies the ftone of contention, the rock of offence.

Boy. This is the rock of offence spoken of by the Royal Prophet, whom Ifrael reveres and honours, in his 118th Pfalm. The ftone which
