LESSON. Acts v. 12. 16.

[N those days: By the hands of the Apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch; but none of the rest durst join themselves with them. But the people extolled them very much, and the multitude of men and women, who believed in the Lord, kept inerasing, in so much that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that, when Peter passed by, his shadow at least might overshadow some one of them, and they might be delivered from their infirmities. There came also to Jerusalem multitudes from the neighbouring cities, bringing the sick, and such as were troubled with unclean spirits, who were all healed.

T that time: Jesus obliged his disciples to go into a ship, and pass over before him to the other side of the water, whilst he sent the multitude away. And when the people were gone, he went alone up into a mountain to pray. And at evening he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with the waves; for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them walking on the sea. And seeing him walking on the sea, they were affrighted and said; It is an apparition; and they eried out for fear. And forthwith Jesus spake to them and said; be of good heart; it is I; fear not. Peter answering, said: Lord if it be thee, bid me come to thee on the water. And he said: Come. And Peter going out of the ship, walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But perceiving the wind very high; he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying; Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand, took hold of him; and said to him: O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt? And being come into the ship, the wind ceased. pertain to God, that he may offer gifts and sacrifices for sins who may have compassion on those that are in ignorance and error; because he himself is also encompassed with infirmity; and therefore he ought to offer the sacrifice for sin himself, as well as for the people. Neither doth any man take this honour upon himself, but he, who like Aaron, is called by God. So Christ glorified not himself, by taking on himself the office of high priest; but he that said to him; Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. He saith also in another place; Thou art a Priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedec.
