1. We mean by buying of the Truth, that ye pubs lickly profefs and own the Truth, and be stedtalt in your adherence thereto, many like Nicodemus are Moons. lightsprofeffors, John 32, who in the times of dan ger and difficulty are afraid openly to efpoufe the caule and interests of truth, but we mult endeavour to be of a more gallant fpirit, firmly refolved as the Apolle fays to fight the good fight of faith, & lo face and rancounter perils; and to profefs a good profeffion before many witnesses, i, e. profeffedly to own the wholfom words of our Lord Jefus Chrift, and the. doctrine which is according to godlinels, 1.Tim. 6. 3414, 13 Heb. 10. 13.

2. We mean by buying of the Truth, that ye res ceive the truth in faith and love, affectionatly applying and carefully improving what ye know and own to betruth; for it is but a poor bargain, to have fome common notices, and undigested notions of the truths of God (wimming in the brain, if there be not the folid faith thereof to fix the mind, the powerfull os› peration thereof to regulate and stay the affections, & the commanding influence thereof to reduce the converfation to a comely conformitie to her own rules, & to fright you from a failzure herein, 1 pro pofe to your ferious thoughts the Apoftolical certific cation, Theff.2. 10. 12. that they all might be damned Tebo believed not the truth, and received not the lothe truth.

3. We mean by buying of the Truth, that ye be zealous and valiant for the defence of the truth, not love ing your lives unto the death if haply this your mer tal fal may prove a step for truth to rile & triumph, it was one of Jeremiahs complaints or oid, Chap. 9.

3.

They are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; and may not we ufurp the fame charge against the plura litie of Profeffers in this our day, wherein alas there are too manie cowardly filly fools under the like bale fet of spirit, Intereft, intereft, & their worldly wealth is that which the most part are anxious to fecure, but whither Truth fink or Swim goes not to near their hearts; O profeffors, let another spirit be in you that whatever be the wretched way of Demafes, Judafes, and Gallior, yet contend ye earnefly for the Faith once delivered to the Saints Jude this is a depofitum com mitted to the truft of the Saints, & who ever would be owned to be Saints of God, ought to see how they will answer for, and discharge this Truft.

4. We mean by buying of the Truth, that ye be for the good report and credit of Truth, by a Truth bes coming converfation in all Gospel fimplicity & inte grity; that fo ye may recommend to others to be buyers & bargainers too, whereas upon the contrare either errours of judgement, or blemishes of conver fation may make the way of truth to be evil Spoken of, 2 Pet. 2. 2. and confequentlie endammage Truths intereft and advancement,

Some Inferences from this particular,

Amos 8, 11, 12

2. Infer, Have we an occafion of fuch plenteous provisions, let us not fill our bellies with fwines busker infead of heavens dainties; too many play the fool & prodigal fo far, as to forfake their Fathers house, where they may bave abundance of all things, and go to feed with bratifh Epicures on fuch fwinish fare as ftarves and poisons their precious fouls; how many commit all uncleannefs with greedinefs, lick up their vomit like Dogs, and drink iniquitie as the Ox drinketh the water brooks, this is a high contempt of Chrifts fare, and of the good things that our heavenlie Father hath provided.
