But, by the foregoing List, it will be easy for the reader to consult the original authors, by whom he will find the topics in general treated at much greater length.

PRELIMINARY OBSERVATIONS.

As it is the professed object of the present work to establish that as an essential doctrine of Christian Theology, which has hitherto been treated by some, as dubious and apocryphal, and by others, as a mere private and curious speculation; it is expedient, that, before we enter on its scriptural evidence, we should distinctly state the nature of the question, the principles on which it rests, and the general opinions which have been entertained concerning it.

As to the question, whether the benefits of Christ's Redemption extend to all the individuals of the human race, or whether they are to be confined exclusively to the members of the Christian Church; there can be no enquiry of more real importance, and none which is more intimately
