33. The History of Samuel, 4th Part. Then the children of Israel fasted; and said, "We have sinned against the Lord, and we will henceforth serve him only." And Samuel offered Sacrifice unto the Lord; but while he offered sacrifice, the Philistines attacked them; and the Lord thundered from Heaven, and the Philistines were defeated with a great slaughter. And the Philistines no more troubled the coasts of Israel during the days of Samuel. And the people of Israel desired Samuel to appoint them a king to rule over them. Then the Lord chose Saul, of the tribe of Benjamin, to be their king: and Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head; and said, "The Lord hath appointed thee to be captain over his inheritance". And Samuel said to all the people, "This is he whom the Lord hath chosen." So Saul became king of 34. The History of Saul, And the children of Ammon made war upon Israel. Then Saul mustered the people, and fought against the children of Ammon, and slew them; and the people offered sacrifices unto the Lord. The Philistines also fought against Israel, but they were overcome with a great slaughter. Yet Saul obeyed not the word of the Lord; and Samuel, by the command of the Lord anointed David, the son of Jesse, to be king over Israel in his room. And when the Philistines again made war upon Israel, there went out a champion from their camp, named Goliah of Gath; and he said, "I defy the armies of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together" 35. The History of Saul, 2nd Part. And David came to the 'camp; and he said unto Saul, "Thy servant will go and fight with this philistine. And he took his staff in his hand, and five smooth stones in his scrip, and his sling in his hand; and drew near to the Philistines. Then when Goliah came near to David to fight, David took a stone, and put it in his sling, and flung it; and smote Goliah in his forehead, and killed him. And the Philistines fled; and the children of Israel pursued them, and slew them, and spoiled their tents. And after seven years, the Philistines again made war upon Israel; and Israel fled before them. And Saul, and three of the sons of Saul were slain. For the battle went sore against Saul; and he took a sword, and fell upon it, and so he died. And the bones of Saul, and of his three sons C were buried under a tree at Jabesh. 36. The History of David, Then David was anointed king over the house of Judah. But a son of Saul was made king over the other tribes of Israel, and reigned seven years, when he was slain, and David became king over all Israel. David then took the city of Jerusalem; also the strong hold of Zion, and built his house and dwelt there. And the Philistines made war against him. But he smote them, and burned their graven images, and drove them from Geba unto Gazer. And David gathered the people of Israel together, and brought the Ark of the Lord |
