they went round the city of Jericho with the ark of the Lord, the people shouted and the priests blew their trumpets; and the wall fell down and they took the City. And five kings of the Amorites came out to fight against Joshua. And the Lord delivered them into his hands, and he slew them, and divided their country among the children of Israel. And Joshua conquered the rest of the land of Canaan, and allotted it out to the twelve tribes. And he said unto them I am now old. Ye have seen all that the Lord, your God, hath done to all these nations for your sakes.. Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and do all that is written in the law of Moses, cleave ye unto the Lord, as you have done this day; and take heed to your selves that ye love the Lord your God. "As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, and serve other Gods. And after these things Joshua died, being an hundred and ten years old. 26. The History of Samson, Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord delivered then into the hands of the Philistines forty years. And there was a man of the tribe of Dan, named Manoah; and the angel of the Lord appeared to his wife, and said, "Thou shalt bear a son, and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hands of the Philistines." And she bare a son, and called his name Samson; and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him, And he was a very strong man, yea the strongest of the sons of men; and he smote the Philistines. Samson loved a Philistine woman, named Delilah. And they hired her with a great price, to seduce him to discover wherein his great strength laid. 27. The History of Samson, And she pressed him with many words, until at length he told her that his strength laid in his hair, which had never been cut. But that if his hair were shaven, he should become weak, like another man, Then when he was asleep, she caused his hair to be cut off; and the Philistines came upon him, and bound him, and put out his eyes. And at one of the feasts of their false god, Dagon, after his hair was grown, and his strength renewed, he was brought forth to make sport for them in the temple of Dagon. Then he desired the lad who led him, to place him so that he might touch the two pillars of the temple. And he took hold of the two pillars, and bowed himself with all his might, and pulled down the house upon himself and the Philistines. And those whom he slew in his death, were more than they whom he had slain during his life. 28. The History of Ruth, There was a famine in the land of Judea. And during the famine a certain man of Bethlehem went to dwell in Moab, with his wife Naomi, and his two sons; and he there died. And his two sons took wives of the women of Moab; the name of the first was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth; and after some time the two sons died. Then when the famine in Judea had ceased, Naomi prepared to return to Bethlehem; and she took leave of her daughters-in-law. But Ruth would not leave her. |
