him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine; and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow, when he departed, he took out two-pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, "Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.'

"Which now of these three thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?' and the Lawyer said, "He that shewed mercy on him." Then said Jesus unto him. "Go, and do thou likewise."

CHAP IV.

The Rich Fool. Luke xii. 10.

The end of him that layeth up treasure for himself and is not rich towards God.

THE ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, what shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do; I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul"Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease; eat, drink, and be merry. But GoD said unto him, "Thou fool! this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose

shall those things be which thou hast provided?-So is he that layeth up treasure for himself and is not rich towards GOD.

CHAP. V.

The Barren Fig-Tree. Luke xiii. 6. If God permits sinners to live, it is that they may have time to repent. A CERTAIN man had a figtree planted in his vineyard, and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, "Behold! these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig-tree and find none cut it down, why cumberethit the ground? And he, answering, said unto him, "Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: and if it bear fruit, well: and if not,

then after that thou shall cut

it down."

CHAP. VI.

The Prodigal Son. Luke xv. 11. God is always ready to forgive Sinners, who sincerely repent, and apply to him for pardon through JESUS CHRIST,

A CERTAIN man had two sons: and the younger of them said to his father; Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me." And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he

began to be in want. And he went, and joined himself to a citizen of that country, who sent him into the fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, "How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare; and I perish with hunger! I will arise, and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son; make me as one of thy hired servants."

And he arose and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father
