this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: for the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Exod. xvii. 1. 7. And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the Lord, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink. And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, Saying, Is the Lord among us, or not? Heb. iii. 7, 8, 9. Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith,) To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness, when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works, forty years. Levit. xvi. 2. And the Lord said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat. Luke i. 68. 70. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people. As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began. 2 Pet. i. 21. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. Psalm cxxxix. 7. Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 1 Cor. ii. 10, 11. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. John xvi. 13. speak: and he will shew you things to come. Isajah lxiii. 10, 11. But they rebelled, and vexed his Holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy and fought against them. Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, Saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the Shepherd of his flock? Where is he that put his Holy Spirit within him? 1 Cor. xii. 8, 9. 11. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit. But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. Luke xi. 20. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. Matt. xii. 28. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Gen. i. 2. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 1, 2. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn. Luke iv. 18, 19. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are. bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. John xiv. 26. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Matt. xxviii. 19. (See above.) 1 Cor. iii. 16. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? Acts iv. 24, 25. And when they heard that they

lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, who hast made heaven, and earth, and sea, and all that in them is; who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? Matt. xii. 31, 32. Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. 2 Thess. ii. 13. But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth. 1 Pet. iv. 6. For for this cause was the Gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the Spirit. 1 Thess. i. 6. And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost. Rom. viii. 11. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead, shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. 2 Cor. xiii. 14. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.

SECTION IV.

Luke iii. 22. And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. 1 Cor. iii. 17. If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 1 Thess. iv. 7, 8. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit. John iii. 8. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. John xx. 22. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Gen. xli. 38. And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? 1 Pet. iv. 14. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the Spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. Isaiah Ixi. 1. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me. 2 Cor. iii. 17. Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. Rom. viii. 9. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. Rom. viii. 15. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Isaiah xi. 2. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. Rom. i. 4. And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Heb. x. 29. Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot

the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? Ephes. i. 13. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the Gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise. Rev. xix. 10. And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellow-servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus, is the Spirit of prophecy. John xiv. 17. Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. Zech. xii. 10. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplications; and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for an only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first born. John xv. 26. (See above, Sect. I.)

SECTION V.

1 Cor. xii. 4—11. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues; but all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
