This Chapter is a continuation of the History brought before us in the previous Eirst Lessons for Easter Day. It shews the final deliverance of Israel by the wonderful Passage of the Eed Sea, and the destruction of Pharaoh and his host. This completed Israel's Eedemption, as our Lord completed our Eedemption by passing through the Eed Sea of Death to His glorious Eesurrection, whereby He swallowed up Death in Victory. Herein lies the suitableness of the Chapter for Easter Day. The Redemption of Israel foreshadowed also the grace of Baptism (see the first Frayer in the Ministration ot Public Baptism). The Israelites were baptized to Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They were separated from Egyptian idolatry, and, with a belief in Jehovah and His Servant Moses (v. 31), began a national life, which was only to be swallowed up in the higher life revealed by the Son of God. N.B. The Church marks the typical character of this History, and its application to our Lord's Burial and Eesurrection, by appointing Exodus xiii. to be read on Easter Eve, and Exodus xii. and xiv. on Easter Day; whilst Psalm cxiv., "When Israel came out of Egypt, &c., ' is one of the Froper Psalms for that Day.
