Q. Do you find any mention of this remarkable circumstance in the New Testament?

A. Our Saviour said, I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, (Elijah) when the heavens was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land: but unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, (Zarephath) a city of Zidon, unto a woman that was a widow.-Luke iv. 25, 26.

Q. What remarkable proof is recorded of the efficacy of Elijah's prayers?

A. Elijah said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word. v. 1.

-

Q. Is there any allusion to this power and efficacy of Prayer in the New Testament?

A. St. James says, The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias, (Elijah) was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months: and he prayed again, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth brought forth herfruit. James v. 16, 17, 18.

Q. What great miracle is recorded of Elijah?

A. He said to the Captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty; and there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.-2 Kings i. 10.

Q. Is this alluded to in the New Testament?

A. James and John said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, as Elias did?-Luke ix. 54.

Q. How is this great Prophet connected with the Gospel?

A. John (the Baptist) was to go before Him,

(Christ) in the spirit and power of Elias.-Luke i. 13, 17.

Q. How can you prove that he was a type or figure of John the Baptist?

A. Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, This is he, of whom it is written, Behold I send My messenger before Thy face, which shall prepare Thy way before Thee. Verily I say unto you, among them that are born of women, there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias which was to come.-Matt. xi. 7, 10, 11, 14.

Q. What further mention do we find of the Prophet Elijah in the New Testament?

A. Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them; and behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with them.-Matt. xvii. 1, 2, 3.

A. Elisha.-v. 15.

CHAPTER V.

Q. What great miracle is recorded of Elisha? A. Naaman, Captain of the host of the King of Syria, who was a leper, came and stood at the

door of the house of Elisha. And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again unto thee, and thou shalt be clean. Then went he down and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh came again, like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.-v. 1, 9, 10, 14.

Q. How many Kings reigned over Judah?
A. Twenty, including Athaliah, the Queen.*
Q. Were they all wicked?

A. A few of them were holy and zealous men. -588 A. C.

ESTHER.

THE BOOK OF JOB.

The celebrated passage in the 19th Chapter of the Book of Job has been applied as a Prophecy of our Saviour; but as there is no positive proof that it was intended to be such, and no quotation of it made by our Saviour, although He names Job, or by the inspired penmen, or from any other part of this venerable and magnificent Work, in the New Testament, I have not attempted to connect it with the New Testament, as I have the other Books of the Old Testament.

PSALMS.

Q. Do we find any prophecies of our Saviour in the Book of Psalms?

A. Why do the heathen so furiously rage together, and why do the people imagine a vain thing? the Kings of the earth stand up, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord, and against His Anointed.-Ps. ii, 1, 2.

Q. Can you prove, from the authority of the New Testament, that David was the writer of this Psalm, and that it contains a direct prophecy of our Saviour?

A. The Apostles, in the Acts, lift up their voice, with one accord, and said, Lord, Thou art God, who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The Kings of the earth stood up, and the Rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against His Christ.-Acts iv. 24, 25, 26. Q. Shew the fulfilment of this prophecy.

A. The Apostles said, Of a truth against Thy holy child Jesus, whom Thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were gathered together, for to do whatever Thy hand and Thy counsel determined before to be done.-Acts iv. 27, 28.

Q. Is there any other prophecy of Christ contained in this Psalm ?

A. I will preach the Law, whereof the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten Thee.-Ps. ii. 7.

Q. Can you prove that this alludes to our Saviour, and shew the fulfilment of it, at the same time, from the New Testament?

A. St. Paul says, in the Acts, We declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the Fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us, their children, in that He hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the Second Psalm, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten Thee.-Acts xiii. 32, 33.

Q. Is this prophecy applied to Christ in any other part of the New Testament?

A. St. Paul says, God hath, in these last days, spoken unto us by His Son, who sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high: being made so much better than the angels, as He hath obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said He, at any time, Thou art My Son; this day have I begotten Thee?-Heb. i. 1. 2, 3, 4, 5.

Q. Any further proof in the New Testament that Christ is here alluded to?

A. St Paul says, So also Christ glorified not Himself, to be made an High Priest; but He said unto Him, Thou art My Son; to day have I begotten Thee.-Heb. v. 5.
