HABAKKUK.-B. C. 626.

Jehoiakim.

CHAPTER I.

Q. Is there any part of this chapter which has been quoted by the writers of the New Testament?

A. Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days which ye will not believe, though it be told you.

Q. Is this passage applied to the obstinate and unbelieving Jews in the New Testament?

A. St. Paul, in the Acts, says, Beware, therefore, lest that come upon you which is spoken of in the Prophets: Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.-Acts. xiii. 41.

CHAPTER II.

Q. Are there any parts of this chapter which are alluded to in the New Testament?

A. Though it tarry, wait for it, because it will surely come, it will not tarry. The just shall live by his faith. v. 3, 4.

Q. Where is this alluded to and cited in the New Testament?

A. St. Paul says, Yet a little while, and He that shall come, will come, and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith.-Heb. x. 37, 38.

CHAPTER 11.

Q. What part of this chapter prophetically describes the coming of the Messiah, as God to His own house?

A. Thus saith the Lord of Hosts; yet once, it is a little while, and 1 will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; and I will shake all nations; and the desire of all nations shall come and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of Hosts.-v. 6, 7.

Q. Where is this prophecy cited and explained in the New Testament?

:

A. St. Paul says, See that ye refuse not Him (Jesus) that speaketh; for if they escaped not who refused Him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from Him that speaketh from heaven: whose voice then shook the earth but now He hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. And this word, yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Wherefore we, receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace.-Heb. xii. 25, 26, 27, 28.

CHAPTER II.

Q. Is there any remarkable passage in this chapter which speaks of the Messiah coming to dwell among His people, and proving His divinity, that He is God?

A. Thus saith the Lord of Hosts, (v. 8.) Lo, I will come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee; and thou shalt know that the Lord of Hosts hath sent me unto thee.—v. 10, 11.

Q. Where is this prophecy accomplished, and the doctrine proved in the New Testament?

A. St. Paul says, Ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.-2 Cor. vi. 16. Jesus said, If a man love me, he will keep my words; and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.-John xiv. 23. Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which, being interpreted, is, God with us. -Matt. i. 23.

CHAPTER [III.]—VI.

Q. What Prophecy of Christ does this chapter contain?

[ocr errors]

A. Behold the Man, whose name is the Branch; and He shall grow up out of His place, and He shall build the temple of the Lord. v. 12.

Q. Explain this Prophecy; first, by comparing it with a corresponding passage in the Old Testament, and then by shewing its fulfilment in the New Testament.

A. Isaiah says, There shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.-Isaiah xi. 1. And Jeremiah says, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.-Jerem. xxiii. 5. See these passages explained in their respective places. Q. Now shew their accomplishment in the New Testament.

A. The generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of David.-Matt. i. 1.

Q. Can you shew how Christ was to build the temple of the Lord?

A. St. Paul says, Ye are built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone; in whom all the building fitly framed together, groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: in whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.--Ephes. ii. 20, 21, 22. St. Peter says, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.1 Peter ii. 5.

Q. What further prophecy, relative to the Messiah, does this chapter contain?

A. He shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon His throne; and He shall be a priest upon His throne.—v. 13.

Q. Can you show, from the New Testament, how Christ was to bear the glory?

A. Jesus said, Father, glorify Thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.-John xii. 28. St. Paul says, God hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.-Phil. ii. 9, 10, 11.

CHAPTER IX.

Q. What celebrated prediction does this chapter contain of the lowliness of the Messiah, and the joy which His coming ought to produce?

A. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: He is just, and having salvation; lowly, riding upon an ass, and upon a colt, the foal of an ass.- -V. 9.

Q. Can you show the fulfilment of this prophecy in the New Testament?

A. Then sent Jesus two disciples, saying unto them, Go ye into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her; loose them, and bring them unto me. All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.-Matt. xxi. 1, 2, 4, 5.
