prayers and unwearied efforts;-they mean, the progress of Christianity throughout the world. On this topic, however, they will not now dwell, although the theme be tempting, and it be difficult to restrain the accents of exultation, when they behold the kings of Europe mustering under the banners of the Prince of Peace, and becoming the nursing fathers of His Church; and when the language of a Christian Poet of our own day, who looked to distant ages for the fulfilment of his high musings, is actually becoming matter of history:
Kneels with the native of the farthest West,
And Ethiopia spreads abroad the hand,
And worships.-
One dark cloud has indeed crossed the cheering prospect.-The Christian observer cannot regard the re-establishment of the papal authority, and the revival of some of the worst institutions of Popery, without considerable alarm. But he will console himself with reflecting, that the Word of God is obtaining a freer course among the nations. We see, as it were, the angel of the Most High flying in the midst of heaven," displaying "the everlasting Gospel to them that dwell in the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people." Before this mighty agent, every strong hold of sin, and every antichristian delusion must ultimately vanish. In the mean time, may we be all found "looking for, and hasting unto the coming of the day of God," "that we may be able to withstand in the evil day" that may yet be coming upon the earth," and, having done all, to stand !”
