Matt. xix. 1. Mark x. 1, § XLVI.

John xi. 55, § LXI.

SECTION XLIV.

WHILE JESUS WAS DISCOURSING ON THE SUBJECT OF THE GIVING OF OFFENCE, AND ON THE DOCTRINE OF THE FORGIVENESS OF INJURIES; THE APOSTLES ASK FOR THE INCREASE OF FAITH; THAT IS OF THE POWER OF WORKING MIRACLES: JESUS' REPLY.

1

No. 182. Eastward.

LUKE xvii. 1-10.

THEN said-he unto the disciples, It-is impossible (Avɛvdekтov) but that-offences will-come: but woe unto him, through whom they 2 -come! It-were-better (Avoireλ) for-him that a-milstone werehanged about his neck, and hecast into the sea, than that heshould-offend one of-these little3 ones. Take-heed to-yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; (επITμnσov, and if he-repent, forgive him. 4 And if he-trespass against thee seven-times in-a day, and seventimes in-a day turn-again to thee, saying, I-repent; thou-shalt-forgive him. And the apostles said unto-the Lord, Increase our (Пpooles μ) 6 faith. And the Lord said, If yehad faith as a-grain of-mustardseed, ye-might-say unto-this syca

mine-tree, Be-thou-plucked-upby-the-root, and be-thou-planted in the sea; and-it-should-obey you. (2) But which of you, 7 having a-servant plowing or feeding-cattle, will-say unto him byand-by, when-he-is- come from the field, Go and-sit-down-tomeat? And will-not rather say 8 unto-him, Make-ready where-with I-may-sup, and gird-thyself, andserve me, till I-have-eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt-eat and drink? Doth he- 9 thank that servant because he-did the-things that-were-commanded him? I-trow not. ye, when-ye-shall-have-done all those-things which-are-commanded you, say, We-are unprofitable servants: we-have-done thatwhich was-our-duty to-do.

JESUS HEALS TEN LEPERS; ONE OF THEM BEING A SAMARITAN.

No. 183. In Galilee before crossing into Peræa.

LUKE xvii. 11-19.

And it-came-to-pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed

through the-midst of-Samaria and Galilee. And as-he entered into 12

a-certain village, there-met him ten men that-were-lepers, which 13 stood afar-off: and they liftedup their voices, (pwvŋv) and-said, Jesus, Master, have-mercy-on us. 14 And when-he-saw them, he-said unto-them, Go shew yourselves unto-the priests. And it-came-topass, that, as they went, they15 were-cleansed. And one of them, when-he-saw that he-was-healed, turned-back, and with a-loud

voice glorified God, and fell-down 16 on his face at his feet, giving him-thanks: and he was a-Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, 17 Were-there-not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There-are- 18 not found that-returned to-give glory to-God, save this stranger. And he-said unto-him, Arise, go- 19 thy-way: thy faith hath-made thee-whole.

JESUS ANSWERS THE PHARISEES, ENQUIRING OF HIM WHEN THE KINGDOM OF GOD WOULD COME; AND THEN ADDRESSES HIS DISCIPLES IN A DISCOURSE WHICH SERVES AS A PRELUDE TO THE PROPHECY AFTERWARDS DELIVERED FROM MOUNT OLIVET.

20

No. 185, In Peraa, East of Scythopolis.

LUKE xvii. 20-37.

(ch. xvii. 19. § XLV.) And when-he-was- demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of-God should-come, (EpxeTai) he-answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: (μETα Tаρarn21 pηoεwc) neither shall - they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of-God is within you. (εντος ύμων.)

22

And he-said unto the disciples, The days will-come, when yeshall-desire to-see one of-the days of-the Son of-man, and ye-shall 23 -not see it. And they-shall-say to-you, See here; or, see there: go not-after them, nor follow them. 24 For as the lightning, that lighteneth out-of the-one part under heaven, shineth unto the - other part under heaven; so shall-also the Son of-man be in his day. 25 But first must he suffer manythings, and be-rejected (aπodokɩ26 paoonvai) of this generation. And as it-was in the days of-Noe, so shall-it-be also in the days of-the 27 Son of-man. They-did-eat, they drank, they-married-wives, theywere-given-in-marriage,until theday that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and de28 stroyed them all. Likewise also

as it-was in the days of-Lot; they -did-eat, they-drank, they-bought, they - sold, they - planted, theybuilded; but the-same day-that 29 Lot went-out of Sodom it-rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even- 30 thus (kara Tavra) shall-it-be inthe day-when the Son of-man isrevealed. In that day, he-which 31 shall-be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let-him-not come-down to-take it-away: and he that is in the field, let-him-likewise not return back.(εis rα dπlow.) Remember (μvnμovɛvete) Lot's 32 wife. Whosoever shall-seek to- 33 save his life shall-lose it; and whosoever shall-lose his-life shallpreserve (Swoyovnσu) it. I-tell 34 you, in-that night there-shall-be two men in one bed; the one shall -be-taken, (πapaλnponσerai) and the other shall-be-left.(apɛ0ŋσɛral.) Two women shall be grinding 35 together; the one shall-be-taken, and the other left. Two men 36 shall-be in the field; the one shall-be-taken, and the other left. And they-answered and-said unto- 37 him, Where, Lord? And he said unto-them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will-the eagles be-gathered-together.

SECTION XLVIII.

FOR THE SAME PURPOSE, AND IN BEHALF OF THE SAME PERSONS, HE SUBJOINS THE PARABLE OF THE UNJUST JUDGE AND THE WIDOW.

1

No. 186. Southward.

LUKE xviii. 1-8.

AND he-spake a-parable untothem to this end, that-men-ought always to-pray, and not to-faint; 2 saying, There-was in a city a judge, which-feared not God, neither regarded (εvτρεTOμεvos) man: and there was a- - widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. 4 And he-would not for a-while: but afterward he-said within himself, Though I-fear not God, nor regard 5 man; Yet because this widow

troubleth me, I-will-avenge her, lest by-her-continual coming sheweary (Twiαly) me. And the 6 Lord said, Hear what the unjust (rns adicias) judge saith. And shall 7 not God avenge (toinσɛɩ tηy ekồiknow) his-own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though hebear-long with (ET) them? I-tell 8 you that he - will-avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when-the Son of-man cometh, shall-he-find faith (Tηy is) on the earth?

SECTION XLIX.

JESUS DELIVERS THE PARABLE OF THE PHARISEE AND THE PUBLICAN, WITH REFERENCE TO CERTAIN, WHO ACCOUNTED THEMSELVES RIGHTEOUS,

AND DESPISED THE REST.

No. 187. Southward.

LUKE xviii. 9-14.

9 And he-spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they-were righteous, and despised others: (εovlevovv10 τας τους λοιπους) Two men wentup into the temple to-pray; the one a-Pharisee, and the other a11 publican. The Pharisee stood and-prayed thus with himself, God, I-thank thee, that I-am not as other (oi XouTоi Twv) men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, 12 or even as this publican. I-fast

twice in-the-week, I-give--tithes

of-all that I-possess. (ктõμαι.) And the publican, standing afar- 13 off, would not lift-up so-much-as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God bemerciful (ixao0nri) to-me a sinner. I-tell you, this-man went-down 14 to his house justified rather than the-other: for every-one that-exalteth himself shall-be-abased; and he that-humbleth himself shall-be-exalted.

THE PHARISEES QUESTION JESUS CONCERNING THE LAWFULNESS OF DIVORCE
FOR ANY CAUSE; HIS ANSWER TO THEM IN PUBLIC; AND LIKEWISE
TO HIS DISCIPLES IN PRIVATE.(1)

MATT. xix. 3-12.

(ch. xix. 2, § XLVI.)

No. 188. Southward.

3 The Pharisees also came-unto him, tempting him, and saying unto-him, Is-it-lawful for-a-man to-put-away his wife for every cause?

4

5

And he answered and-said unto-them,

Have-ye-not read, that he whichmade them at the-beginning

made them male and female, and said, For this-cause shall-a-man leave father and mother, and shall-cleaveto his wife:

and they twain shall-be one flesh? (εις σαρκα μιαν.)

6 Wherefore they-are no-more twain, but one flesh.

What therefore God hath-joinedtogether, (ovvεŽεvžεv) let-not man put-asunder. (xwpierw.) 7 They-say unto - him, Why - didMoses then command to-give awriting of-divorcement, and to8 put her-away? He-saith untothem, Moses because-of (ρос)
