Matt. xix. 1. Mark x. 1. § XLVI. John xi. 55. § LXI.

LUKE xiv.

thou-makest a-feast, (doxn) call the-poor, the-maimed, the-lame, 14 the-blind: and thou-shalt-be blessed; for they-can not recompense thee: for thou shalt-be-recompensed at the resurrection ofthe just.

15

And when one of them thatsat-at-meat-with him heard these -things, he-said unto-him,Blessed is he-that shall-eat bread in the 16 kingdom of God. Then said he unto-him, A-certain man made a-great supper, and bade many: 17 And sent his servant at-supper time to-say to-them that-werebidden, Come; for all-things are 18 now ready. And they-all with -one consent (aо μias) began tomake-excuse. (Tapairεiolai) The first said unto-him, I-have-bought a-piece-of-ground, and I-must needs (εχω αναγκην) go and see it: I-pray thee have me excused. 19 (πapηnμεvov.) And another said,

I-have-bought five yoke of-oxen, and I-go to- prove (dokiμaσai) them: I-pray thee have me excused. And another said, I-have- 20 married a-wife, and therefore Ican not come. So that servant 21 came, and-shewed his lord thesethings. Then the master-of-thehouse being-angry said to-his servant, Go-out quickly into the streets and lanes of-the city, and bring-in hither the poor, and the-maimed, and the-halt, and the-blind. And the servant said, 22 Lord, it-is-done as thou-hast-commanded, and yet there-is room. And the lord said unto the ser- 23 vant, Go-out into the highways and hedges, and compel (avayKarov) them to-come-in, that my house may-be-filled. For I-say 24 unto-you, That none of-those men which were-bidden shall-taste ofmy supper.

JESUS, WARNS THE MULTITUDES, WHO WERE FOLLOWING HIM IN HIS JOURNEYINGS, WHAT WAS NECESSARY, TO BECOME HIS DISCIPLES.

No 177. Eastward.

LUKE xiv. 25-35.

25 And there-went great multitudes with-him: and he-turned, 26 and-said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his-own life also, 27 he-can not be my disciple. And whosoever doth-not bear (BaoTake) his cross, and come after 28 me, can not be my disciple. For

which of you, intending to-build a-tower, sitteth not-down first, and-counteth the cost, whether he-have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after-he hath - laid 29 the-foundation, and is-not able tofinish it, all that behold it begin to-mock (μπaïɛ) him, saying, 30 This man began to-build, and was-not able to-finish. Or what 31 king, going to-make-war against

JESUS DEFENDS HIMSELF AGAINST THE EXCEPTIONS OF THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES, FOR RECEIVING AND EATING WITH PUBLICANS AND

SINNERS.

No. 178. Eastward.

LUKE xv. 1-10.

1 THEN drew-near (Hoav de ɛyyiLovτes) unto-him all the publicans 2 and sinners for-to-hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This-man receiveth (poodεxεTα) sinners, and eateth-with them.

3 And he-spake this parable unto 4 them, saying, What man of you, having an-hundred sheep, if helose one of them, doth-not leave the ninety-and-nine in the wilderness, and go after that (Eπ TO) which-is-lost, until he-find it? 5 And when-he-hath-found it, helayeth it on his shoulders, rejoic6 ing. And when-he-cometh home, he-calleth-together his friends and neighbours, saying unto-them, Rejoice-with me; for I-have

found my sheep which was-lost. I-say unto-you, that likewise joy 7 shall-be in heaven over one sinner that-repenteth, (μeravoovvri) more than over ninety-and-nine just-persons, (dikalois) which need no repentance. (ου χρειαν εχουσι μeravoias.) Either what woman 8 having ten pieces-of-silver, if shelose one piece, doth-not light acandle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she-find it? And when-she-hath-found it, she- 9 calleth her friends and her neighbours-together, saying, Rejoicewith me; for I-have-found the piece which I-had-lost. Likewise 10 I-say unto-you, there-isjoy in-thepresence-of the angels of-God over one sinner that-repenteth.

JESUS TAKES OCCASION FROM THE SAME OCCURRENCE TO DELIVER THE PARABLE OF THE ELDER AND THE YOUNGER BROTHER; OR AS IT IS COMMONLY CALLED, THE PARABLE OF THE PRODIGAL SON.

11

No. 179. Eastward.

LUKE xv. 11-32.

And he-said, a-certain man had 12 two sons: and the younger ofthem said to-his-father, Father, give me the portion of-goods thatfalleth to me. And he-divided (dev) unto-them his living. (rov 13 Biov.) And not many days after the younger son gathered alltogether, and-took-his-journey into a-far country, and there wasted (dokoρTIOε) his substance with-riotous living. (¿wv αowrwc.) 14 And when-he had-spent all, therearose a-mighty famine in that land; and he began to-be-in15 want. (vorEpεloat.) And he-went and-joined-himself to-a citizen of that country; and he-sent him 16 into his fields to-feed swine. And he-would-fain (επεOvμɛi) havefilled his belly with the husks that the swine did-eat: and noman gave unto-him.

17

And when-he-came to himself, he-said, How-many hired-servants of-my father's have breadenough-and-to spare, (TEρiσσεvovoi aprov) and I perish with-hun18 ger! I-will-arise and-go to my father, and will-say unto-him, Father, I-have- sinned against 19 heaven, and before thee, and am no-more worthy to-be-called thy son: make me as one of-thy hired 20 servants. And he-arose, and-came to his father.

But when-he was yet a-greatway-off, his father saw him, and

had-compassion, and ran, and-fell on his neck, and kissed him. And 21 the son said unto-him, Father, Ihave-sinned against heaven, and in thy-sight, and am no-more worthy to-be-called thy son. But 22 the father said to his servants, Bring-forth the best robe, and put-it-on him; and put a-ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: and bring-hither the fatted calf, 23 and-kill it; and let-us-eat andbe-merry: (εvpρavowμɛv) this my son was dead, and isalive-again; he-was lost, and isfound. And they-began to-bemerry.

for 24

Now his elder son was in the- 25 field: and as he-came and-drewnigh to-the house, he-heard music and dancing. And he-called one 26 of-the servants, and-asked what these things meant. And he said 27 unto-him, Thy brother is-come; and thy father hath-killed the fatted calf, because he-hathreceived him safe - and - sound. And he-was-angry, (wpyɩ0ŋ) and 28 would not go-in:

Therefore came his fatherout, and -intreated him. And 29 he answering said to-his-father, Lo, these - many years do-Iserve thee, neither transgressedI at-any-time thy commandment: and yet thou-never gavest me akid, that I-might-make- merry (εuppavow) with my friends: but 30

JESUS SUBJOINS TWO MORE PARABLES, BOTH MORAL, OR RELATING TO THE RULE OF LIFE: THE PARABLE OF THE UNJUST STEWARD, AND THE PARABLE OF THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS.

[blocks in formation]

1 AND he-said also unto his disciples, There-was a-certain rich man, which had a-steward; and the-same was-accused unto-him that he-had-wasted his goods. 2 And he-called him, and-said untohim, How-is-it-that I-hear this of thee? give an account of-thy stewardship; for thou-mayest-be 3 (ovvnoy) no longer steward. Then the steward said within himself, What shall-I-do? for my lord taketh-away from me the stewardship: I-can (oxvw) not dig; to 4 beg I-am-ashamed. I-am-resolved (Eyvwv) what to-do, that, when I-am-put-out-of the stewardship, they-may-receive me 5 into their houses. So he-called every one of-his lord's debtors unto him, and-said unto-the first, How-much owest-thou unto-my 6 lord? And he said, An-hundred measures of oil. And he said unto-him, Take thy bill, and sitdown quickly, and-write fifty.

Then said-he to-another, And 7 how-much owest thou? And he said, An-hundred measures ofwheat. And he-said unto-him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore. And the lord commended 8 (ETVEσEV) the unjust (rns adikias) steward, because he-had-done wisely (ppovuws) for the children of-this world (auwvoc) are in their generation (eg Tηv yεveav Tηv auTwv) wiser than (v) the children of-light. (rov proc.)

And-I say unto-you, Make to- 9 yourselves friends of the mammon of-unrighteousness; that, when ye-fail, they-may-receive you into-everlasting habitations. (onvas.) He that is faithful in that 10 which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the-least is unjust also in much. If therefore ye-have-not been 11 faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will-commit to-yourtrust the true riches? And if ye- 12

have-not been faithful in that which is another-man's, who shall give you that which is your-own? 13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he-will-hate the one, and love the other; or else hewill-hold-to (avlɛžɛrai) the one, and despise the other. Ye can not serve God and mammon. 14 And the Pharisees also, who-were covetous, (papyvoo) heard all these-things: and they-derided 15 (εžεμvктηpisov) him. And he-said unto-them, Ye are they whichjustify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly-esteemed (nov) among men is abomination in-the-sight of-God.

:

The law and the prophets were until John since that-time the kingdom of God is-preached, and every-man presseth (Blazera) into 17 it. (1) And it-is easier for-heaven and earth to-pass, than one tittle of-the law to-fail.

19

Whosoever putteth-away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth-adultery: and whosoever marriethher-that-is-put-away from her husband committeth-adultery. There was a-certain rich man, which was-clothed in-purple and fine-linen, and-fared sumptuously (εvopaivoμevos λаμπρwг) every 20 day: and there was a - certain beggar named Lazarus, which was-laid at his gate, full-of-sores, 21 and desiring to-be-fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table moreover the dogs 22 came and-licked his sores. And

John xi. 55, § LXI.

it-came-to-pass, that-the beggar died, and was-carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich-man also died, and wasburied; and in hell (ry ädy) he- 23 lift-up his eyes, being in torments, and-seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he 24 cried and-said, Father Abraham, have-mercy-on me, and send Lazarus, that he-may-dip the tip ofhis finger in-water, and cool my tongue; for I-am-tormented (odvvua) in this flame. But Abra- 25 ham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst (areλaßes) thy good-things, and likewise Lazarus evil-things: but now he is-comforted, and thou art-tormented. And beside all 26 this, between us and you there-isa-great gulf fixed: (EσTηpirai) sothat they which-would pass fromhence to you cannot; neither can-they pass to us, that would come from-thence. Then he-said, 27 I-pray (Epwrw) thee therefore, father, that thou - wouldest - send him to my father's house: for I- 28 have five brethren; that he-maytestify-unto (diaμaprupηrai) them, lest they also come into this place of-torment. Abraham saith unto- 29 him, They-have Moses and the prophets; let-them-hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abra- 30 ham: but if one went unto them from the-dead, they-will-repent. And he said unto - him, If they- 31 hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will - they - be persuaded, though one rose from the-dead.
