Examiner-C. ADDAMS WILLIAMS, ESQ.

The figures in the margin indicate full marks.

1. Explain the meaning of " velocity of approach." Show what modification has to be made in the equation of discharge for a completelysubmerged sluice, to allow for the effect of velocity of approach, in terms of the area of the approach-channel.

2. Explain in detail the method of ascertaining the discharge of a canal or river by means of velocity rods.

3.

You are ordered to report on a proposed scheme for draining a low-lying tract of country into a non-tidal river. State what points you would enquire into, and what observations you would make.

4. It is required to pump a supply of 1,000 gallons a minute from a river into a reservoir, the surface of the water in which is 30 feet above the surface of the river, its distance from the river being 2,000 feet. An engine is available, capable of yielding a useful effort of 20 effective H.P. (after allowing for all resistances in the pump). What
