3. Explain the nature of the measures adopted by the Tudor and the Stuart sovereigns to arrogate legislative power to themselves.

What do you consider to be the most effective means of improving the condition of the labouring population in the present state of the industrial world? How do you account for the fact that women's wages are generally lower than those of men ?

5. What, according to Marshall, are the qualities required in an ideal manufacturer, and what classes of people have the best opportunities of developing business ability and of turning that ability to fall account? What are the elements of which the supply price of business ability in command of capital may be said to be composed ?

6. State after Marshall the law of increasing return, and discuss the statement that while the part which nature plays conforms to the law of

2. The two engines of the democratic development (at Athens) were Lot and pay.' Explain this, and state how the operation of the Lot was at first modified. What other reforms contributed to the same result.

3. How did the goat song of the days of Pisistratus grow into the tragedy of Aeschylus'? What attitude was taken up by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, respectively, towards the national religion? How could it be said that, tragic poetry owed its death to Euripides and the Socratic spirit ?

4. Compare the attitude of the individual towards the State of Athens with that adopted by the Spartans. How did the Athenian State' assume the character of a commercial society'?

5. What is known of the affinities and civilization of the Etruscans ? What share did they take in the general movement against Hellenism, which was contemporary with the Persian invasion of Greece ?

6 Mention the chief wars by which Roman authority was extended over Italy. Show that the application of the name Italy was different at different epochs.

7. Sketch the history and powers of the offices of Praetor and Censor.
