Whofo hath this World's Good, and feeth his Brother have need, and fhutteth up his Bowels of Compaffion from him, how dwelleth the Love of God in him?

z Whofo mocketh the Poor, reproacheth his Maker; but he that honoureth him hath Mercy on the Poor.

CANDOUR.

Judge not, that ye be not judged; In judging. condemn not, that ye be not condemn

ed: For with what Judgment ye judge, ye fhall be judged; and with what Meafure ye mete, it thall be measured to you again.

b Judge nothing before the Time, until the Lord' come, who both will bring to Light the hidden Things of Darkness, and will make manifeft the Counfels of the Hearts; and then shall every Man that hath done well have Praife of God.

• Who art thou that judgest another Man's Ser. vant? To his own Master he standeth or falleth.

But why doft thou judge thy Brother? or why doft thou fet at nought thy Brother? For we fhall all stand before the Judgment-seat of Christ.

So then every one of us fhall give Account of himself to God; let us not therefore judge one another any more.

Judge not according to the Appearance; but judge righteous Judgment.

& Charity thinketh no Evil, believeth all Things, hopeth all Things; rejoiceth not in Iniquity, but rejoiceth in the Truth.

One believeth that he may eat all Things; another who is weak eateth Herbs: Let not him that eateth, defpife him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not, judge him that eateth.

i Take no heed unto all Words that are fpoken, left thon hear thy Servant curfe thee. For oftentimes alfo thine own Heart knoweth that thou thy felf likewife haft curfed others.

k

* Why beholdeft thou the Mote that is in thy Brother's Eye, but confidereft not the Beam that is in thine own Eye? Thou Hypocrite, firft caft out the Beam out of thine own Eye, and then fhalt thou fee clearly to caft out the Mote out of thy Brother's Eye.

Thou art inexcufable, O Man, whosoever thou art that judgeft, when thou that judgest doft the fame Things; for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemneft thyfelf. And thinkeft thou this, O Man, that judgeft them which do fuch Things, and doft the fame, that thou shalt efcape the Judgment of God?

m He that is without Sin among you, let him first caft a Stone at his Neighbour.

Speak

Speak not Evil one of another, Brethren; for he that fpeaketh evil of his Brother, and judgeth his Brother, fpeaketh Evil of the Law, and judgeth the Law.

P Thou shalt not raife a falfe Report.

He that covereth a Tranfgreffion, feeketh Love; but he that repeateth a Matter, feparateth very Friends.

He that uttereth a Slander is a Fool.

The Lips of the Righteous know what is acceptable; but the Mouth of the Wicked fpeaketh Frowardness.

Lord, who fhall abide in thy Tabernacle? He that backbiteth not with his Tongue, nor taketh up a Reproach against his Neighbour.

"All that watch for Iniquity fhall be cut off; and they that make a Man an Offender for a Word. w Whofo privily flandereth his Neighbour, he fhall be cut off. And Revilers fhall not inherit

the Kingdom of God.

* The Wicked fhall be afhamed, and put to Silence, which speak, grievous Things proudly and contemptuously against the Righteous.

TRUTH and SINCERITY.

Lie not one to another; feeing ye have put off the old Man with his Deeds. But fpeak the Truth in Love.

[blocks in formation]

Put away Lying, and fpeak every Man Truth with his Neighbour; for we are Members one

of another.

2 Lay afide all Guile and Hypocrifies. Keep thy Tongue from Evil, and thy Lips from speaking Guile.

As God is true, let not your Word toward one another be Yea and Nay.

Of whom haft thou been afraid, that thou haft lied, and haft not remembered me, (saith the Lord) nor laid it to thy Heart?

He that hateth, diffembleth with his Lips, and layeth up Deceit within him: He bleffeth with his Mouth, but curfeth inwardly; fpeaking Lies in Hypocrify.

As a Madman who cafteth Firebrands, Arrows, and Death; fo is the Man that deceiveth his Neighbour, and faith, Am I not in Sport?

A lying Tongue hateth thofe that are afflicted by it; and a flattering Mouth worketh Ruin.

A Man that flattereth his Neighbour, fpreadeth a Net for his Feet.

A wicked Doer giveth heed to falfe Lips; and a Liar giveth Ear to a naughty Tongue.

A double-minded Man is unstable in all his Ways.

He that faith unto the Wicked, Thou art righteous, him fhall the People curfe; Nations fhall abhor him.

[blocks in formation]

* Whofe Hatred is covered by Deceit, his Wickedness fhall be thewed before the whole Congregation.

The Lip of Truth fhall be established for ever; but a lying Tongue is but for a Moment: For the Mouth of them that fpeak Lies fhall be stopped.

[ocr errors]

Lying Lips are an Abomination to the Lord; but they that deal truly are his Delight.

n The Lord fhall deftroy them which speak Peace to their Neighbours, but Mischief is in their Hearts.

• All Liars fhall have their Part in the Lake which burneth with Fire and Brimstone.

EDIFICATION.

P Comfort yourselves together, and In generól.

edify one another.

Let us follow after the Things wherewith one may edify another. Let all Things be done to edifying.

Let us confider one another, to provoke unto Love and to good Works; and fo much the more, as we fee the Day approaching.

Let every one of us please his Neighbour, for his Good to Edification; not feeking our own Profit, but the Profit of many, that they may be faved. For even Chrift pleafed not himfelf.

All Things are lawful for me, but all Things edify not.
