[H. 524. 4. But if Immanuel's face appear, My hope, my joy begins,

(Stanza 1 in Music, 5, 6 omitted.) 2. He still the ancient promise keeps, To our forefathers given; Young children in his arms He takes, And calls them heirs of heaven.

3. "Permit them to approach," He cries, "Nor scorn their humble name; For 'twas to bless such souls as these, The Lord of angels came."

4. We bring them, Lord, with thankful

Great Comforter, descend and bring Some tokens of thy grace.

2. Dost thou not dwell in all the saints, And seal the heirs of heaven? When wilt thou banish my complaints, And show my sins forgiven?

3. Assure my conscience of her part
In the Redeemer's blood;
And bear thy witness with my heart,
That I am born of God.

4. Thou art the earnest of his love,
The pledge of joys to come;
And thy soft wings, celestial Dove,
Will safe convey me home.

3. Dear Name, the rock on which I build, 2. When most we need his gracious hand,

My shield and hiding-place;

My never-failing treasury, fill'd
With boundless stores of grace.

4. Jesus, my Shepherd, Husband, Friend,
My Prophet, Priest, and King;
My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End,
Accept the praise I bring.

5. Weak is the effort of my heart,

And cold my warmest thought; But when I see thee as thou art, I'll praise thee as I ought.

And clouds surround his throne;
He hides the purpose of his grace,
To make it better known.

5. And when our dearest comforts fall,
Before his sovereign will,
He never takes away our all;
Himself He gives us still.

2. I need the influence of thy grace,
To speed me in thy way;
Lest I should loiter in my race,
Or turn my feet astray.

3. When sore afflictions press me down,
I need thy quickening powers;
Thy word that I have rested on,
Shall help my heaviest hours.

4. Are not thy mercies sovereign still,
And thou a faithful God?
Wilt thou not grant me warmer zeal,
To run the heavenly road?

6. Then shall I love thy gospel more,
And ne'er forget thy word,
When I have felt its quickening power
To draw me near the Lord.

For such a bright display,

As makes a world of darkness shine With beams of heavenly day.
